Does anybody know why they exclude the "y" in Transylvanian? Is it a simple misspelling or is "Transilvanian" somehow correct?

For me, trying to review this album is somewhat futile. I was not really aware of Black Metal during the original "New Wave" movement of the early 90s. I really didn't find the genre until 1996 or so.

So when you take context out, most Darkthrone is pretty average at best. The best song on TH is the title track, and Darkthrone's best album is Blaze in the Northern Sky (in spite of the cow bell).

Don't get me started on Mayhem ... surely a candidate for most overrated band of all time (musically).

It's just a typo because Fenriz was too busy being awesome to have a dictionary at hand.

Even though i know what you mean i'd rather say that due to the noisy production every single riff is "infinite", inscrutable, boundless. A bit like an abstract painting it's virtually impossible to "get it" 100%.

I'm able to through scrutinize everything on the album. All the riffs can be clearly heard, and reveal their whole selves for carefully evaluation, the vocals too are far from esoteric, and the atmosphere is one the purest and most singularly-focused I've ever heard. What about the music makes it this way for you?

I mean, on the one hand the basic melodies are crisp clear so it's not difficult to hear what the given song "is about", but on the other one the sheer noise adds some deal of impenetrability to the whole. That's at least the way i perceive this unquestionably fantastic record.

Hmm, I guess we just see it differently. I barely even notice the fuzz around the main melodies, I guess that says something about immersion of the compositions.

Transilvanian hunger is overrated. Sure, it is one of the ultimate BM classics, but just compare it to ' A blaze in the Northern sky' , which is way better and way more variated, and In fact one of the best (The best!) BM albums . Transilvanian hunger is just blastbeats and different riffs, which is sometimes boring. No offense, I really like the album, especially the title song, but realize it's not one of the greatest BM albums.

Erm. Doesn't it make sense that the name of a Romanian place should be spelt in Romanian? English isn't the only language in the world.

Classic album for your Black Metal collection, if you ask me. Not the greatest of Darkthrone.. But atleast of one them.

Reading this thread got me to go back and listen to Transylvanian Hunger again. Black Metal is my favorite genre of music, and the atmosphere provided by the low production is fine, but I just can't listen to this album due to the repitition.

After 8 seconds into the first song, I feel like I've heard everything the song has to offer, and while I can't say every other song on the album sounds the same, they do all follow the same formula as the first song. Opening rift played for 1 minute, secondary rift played for 1 minute, opening rift for another minute, secondary rift for 1 minute... repeat for 5 minutes.

I think I could really get into it if I liked the rifts, but I don't. They strike me as shallow (uninspired and/or empty) and simplistic, like each rift consists of 3-4 different notes/chords, meaning that each song has a grand total of 6-8 different sounds. There is no building, no progression, no power for me.

It just bores me away to another album by someone else. I have to agree with others when they say Burzum has done this "minimalist" style with far greater effects.

YOU GODDAMN FUCKING IDIOT, IT'S RIFFS, NOT rifts!!! :brick: :guns: :puke:

Everyone who can't spell the word 'riffs' properly (and still claims to be a metalhead) has absolutely no fucking excuse whatsoever and needs to die in the most painful way possible.

I'd have to argue that correcting one's grammar and/or spelling goes against everything that metal is. See "I am the Black Wizards," every English song by Immortal, and:

Indeed the majority of the bands you listed are better than what comes out of Sweden, but that doesn't mean Sweden has nothing to offer when it comes to black metal.

This guy is really funny...

4 of these bands would be a real stretch to call black metal. The main bulk of rest of the bands are either really bad or nothing special. In fact, the only really good black metal bands on that list are Arckanum and Watain. Perhaps Shining's early material might qualify as well (though their later releases are terrible).

And apart from the aforementioned Shining, there isn't even a mention of the depressive scene he glorified. Perhaps this fag hasn't even heard any of the real ones. These are one of the main reasons that the Swedish bm scene sucks ass for the most part, and how anyone could take their pretentious crap for black metal is beyond me.

No, for swedish bm, this is where it's at:

Ofermod, Craft, Vinterland, Funeral Mist, Malign, Mortuus...

There are actually good bands, tou just have to look past the crap ones.

I mean Dark Funeral? Marduk (even if they have their moments)? Setherial? What The Fuck?

The most generic and overrated bands in the world against the awesomeness that is Darkthrone and especially Transilvanian Hunger?

You probably, since I can see how a long time listening to Dark Funeral would be prone to make male genitalia shrink.

Nah you're right. Gonna let this troll go now.

Perhaps we should try to get some worthwile discussion going in this thread instead of just people baiting the troll.

I don't think Transilvanian Hunger is too repetitive for it's own good for instance. It may be repetitive, but it still managens to be memorable, chocked full of simplistic, awesome riffing, and sinister as hell. I can understand where the hate is coming from. The riffs are very much the same throughout the album, but either you like the riffing style they used, or you don't.

I don't really understand the hype about Under A Funeral Moon though. It contains a few good songs, but the majority of it is boring and fails to grab any attention from me. Perhaps it's the same thing that makes me like TH, but reverse. I simply don't find the riffing style to be that appealing. To Walk The Infernal Fields is still an awesome track though. It's a shame the album itself isn't up to par.

I actually think it's the best Darkthrone has put out. The songwriting and riffs are really catchy and it has some killer classic DT songs, specially To Walk the Infernal Fields, Unholy Black Metal or the title track. Apart from that, I love the raw sound of the guitars, and Nocturno's performance on the vocals is just brilliant, probably one of my favourite BM vocals.

ED: fucked up with the quotes.

Transilvanian Hunger's totally amazing, although yeah you need patience to actually listen to the damn think instead of crying about it being repetitive.

The fact that the name is spelled with ''i'' instead of ''y'' is because it's with and ''i'' in Romanian (maybe Fenriz was drunk too, I don't know) and they wanted to convey a more accurate image of the place.

As for black metal, who the hell can say that swedish BM sucks while norwegian BM rules and vice versa? both countries have their awesome and their generic/shitty bands. I for one love most of the classic norwegian BM bands, as well as the melodic ones, but I have no problem with some swedish stuff although the ones I like are rarer (I love Marduk except maybe Panzer Division, Dissection if considered BM while Dark Funeral is boring crap and most bands aren't very distinctive nor do they have much of an aesthetic, which is important when it comes to BM).
