We are dipping our toes in the water and are looking to start a regular Swedish metal event in Stockholm. What Swedish metal bands are underrated and you think would be suitable for a venue with a capacity of 200-400?

If you are in Stockholm, other than Fedagsmangel in Jakobsberg, what do you go see regularly, if any?

Azure. Both their albums are good if you're looking for some melodic black/death metal in the vain of Dissection and Necrophobic.

Moonlight Legend:

King of Stars - Bearer of Dark (full album stream wasn't available on YouTube for some reason):

make Desultory a good offer to reunite.

same goes for Candle. they had a big thing going when they came out, now I had to check the m-a to see what happened to them.

or if you could convince Krionik to get a lineup going,

or Ced to play as Mortyr for a change.

i could mention always "Infernal Gates", criminally underrated - how they didn't strike it big is beyond me, the album " From The Mist Of Dark Waters" is a masterpiece.

Maybe you could get some of the old, newly reformed bands to play? Torch, Axewitch, Mindless Sinner etc.

Great list, thanks folks! That is 31 bands to look at right there.

I am also interested in Heavy metal (as in less heavy than death etc.) and possibly some hard rock too.

In Mourning tycker jag förtjänar mer uppmärksamhet, men de kanske är kändare än vad jag tror?

Wolf, Morgana Lefay and Memento Mori, then Memory Garden and Tad Morose.

All of them are relatively known, however I believe they are on the same level and higher than a lot of really well-known bands, so that makes underrated in my book. Especially the 3 first are among my favorite bands.

Other than them, I'd say Armory and Antichrist from more recent bands.

I made a mistake sorry. The first band I mentioned is actually called Daggmar Luring and it has members of the 80's one hit wonder metal group "Lynx". I would also like to mention that Wizz (The Swedish Melodic Metal group) has been looking for members since 2019-2020. If anyone is interested to play, write a message on the ex-singer's YT channel:

Two power metal bands that are kind of forgotten about:

Steel Attack (listed as "on hold" here, but would be great to see get back together for a special appearance)

YES THEY FUCKING ARE! Just because you've heard of them doesn't mean they aren't underrated. Wolf is especially underrated.

A lot of great bands already mentioned, I'd like to add Insania to the list of prospective power metal bands, along with Freternia. The former is local to Stockholm and both bands have recently reformed and put out new material after an extended hiatus, and though I've sadly not seen either of them live (not sure if they ever made it to the U.S.), if their studio work is any indication, they'd be a great addition to any metal event or festival.

Nah, cool bands but they've all had their chances, so I'd say they're rated about right.

Oh and I know we're on opposite sides of the planet Kai but no need to bloody shout dude.

Wolf, Morgana Lefay and Tad Morose are great, but yeah, they're never going to be big arena bands or whatever. They're appreciated as underground gems as they should be with what they do. They made music for niche fanbases - it's fine and even welcome...

cool bands but they've all had their chances, so I'd say they're rated about right.

"They've had their chances" means that what happened to them is not unfair, which I am not sure I agree but that's another discussion. Only, the topic asks for underrated bands, which is a broader umbrella term than just bands that did not make it big commercially. Rated about right? By whom? The scene? In this instance, I am judging the general scene consensus (what most people think about them ("cool bands") or if they've really sat down and listened to them) and the two replies here from you and Empy confirm my thinking: The music of all those bands (especially Wolf and Morgana) in my opinion of course, should appeal to a much larger audience and more importantly, should have way more exposure and respect from the "scene", including this community. The fact that Wolf is well-known in Sweden or had some success in the UK, is not enough. Wolf (again, stressing, in my opinion) are not "cool". They are the best heavy/power metal band of the new milenium. That's what I think at least. Tons of amazing songs. They combine Maiden, Priest, Mercyful Fate in a unique way. Everybody loves those bands but hasn't really listened to Wolf. Stellar sound and players, great vocals. And if you ask the average joe who listens to heavy metal he will remember Wolf mostly because they had that ridiculous cover on their debut.

Sure, people in the know appreciate them or Morgana Lefay or Tad Morose or Memento Mori. But if you think they are COOL, that just proves my point; I think they are GREAT and that a lot more people would love them if they gave them a serious chance (not a couple of minutes of online streaming). So, yeah, very much underrated.

Anyway...
Someday this will be appreciated for the heavy metal perfection it is
THE BITE
DOOOOOOOOOM
"Perfection"
That fucking guitar tone, holy shit Mike!
Krux is lucky if they are remembered for one album... and yet...

^Good grief you're being petty Vic, cool often equates to great in my book mate, which Morgana Lefay, Tad Morose, Memento Mori, Necrophobic and Wolf all are. They've all been going since the 90's and put out plenty of albums but how many more chances do they need to get rated to your approval by the general metal/rock buying public?

Underrated and overrated are stupid fuckin terms.

I don't think they are. I explained what I mean by underrated and I think I am entitled to believe that the bands I mentioned fit the bill.
You keep talking about "chances". Why? I am not talking about fairness or if they did the right moves or if they released their music at the right time. All of those are valid discussion points and whoever feels like engaging we can talk about them (Black Mark is a discussion in itself). Wolf btw, has been around since 1999, 2000 if we consider the availability.

I believe that more people would like Wolf or Morgana or the rest if they gave them a proper chance. I am not talking about professional opportunities (although that's a fine discussion in itself) but people into those subgenres sitting down with them. I believe that most people have not given them a proper listen. I KNOW that is true among a lot of my friends and I love seeing guys discover them eventually. The same is true for say, Holy Terror or Destiny's End. Leatherwolf. That's my opinion. Why the hell is that a petty opinion? I differentiate between "cool" and "great". Sorry if I came off as antagonistic, not my intention but I don't see what the problem is.

I know, I bought the S/T as soon as I could after reading the review for it in Terrorizer magazine back then. Black Wings is one of my favourite albums ever and I'd say it can hold it's own with any of the greats but the following albums, as hard as they tried, never really came close to topping it.

Ok, forget our argument, now I am just getting depressed! At this point I would love to see in real life how you respond to Evil Star and Black Flame (the two best heavy metal albums of the new millenium, IMO - see? underrated!). I know you have good taste, I remember.
That is why it is impossible to me to fathom that you don't vibe with The Bite, Children of the Black Flame or The Dead. It's like people telling me "Yeah, Metal Church is a cool song". "Sure, Metal Heart, nice".

Anyway, enough fanboying.
Devil Moon
A crimson sky for a crimson mind
An evil spiral on the wind
Lurking in the shadows and the mist
The dust is full of ancient tears
That fell to the ground and disappeared
While the same old face seemed to sneer in silence

My precious gold has turned to rust
And my former victory to bitter loss
Forgotten by the black and by the white
In an unholy alliance

The only light that lights my way
Enlightens only my evil ways
My way is not the narrow one
But the one that leads to pain

Pain for you pleases me
Please forgive me for my deeds
Indeed it's hard for you to see
That you alone can set me free

Each dawn a piece of my heart dies
No peace of mind until night
My mind is ticking unclockwise
Each second closer to demise

To be free, a thought unreal
Unravel the riddle and break the seal
To unlock these chains for me
Could be a fatal deal

The Black Flame was always far and away their best - but their other stuff is good too. I think maybe it's been a while since I heard their second and third albums. Maybe I'll revisit those soon.
