Maybe the Vinny and Darrell's families will be onboard for a cut of the take?

I know a lot of die hard Pantera fans and for most of them the band is defined by Phil and Darrell. Will they accept 50% of that? Especially as rough as Phil can sound these days.

Nothing sketchy about a "reunion tour" when half of the original band members are dead.

Ugh. I can already see the Pantera logo plastered across the top of every major festival line-up poster for 2023. What a fucking joke. Anselmo's such a shameless hack, and I'm embarrassed to know that so many crowds will inevitably show up to support this.

Coincidentally, Anthrax and Black Label Society are about to go on tour together. If the rumors about Charlie and Zakk are true, there might be some announcement soon as a tie-in.

As others have said, this always felt like it was an eventuality with the Abbotts or others, anyway. Won't begrudge anyone that goes to see them and/or picks up a new album which I think is certainly happening, like it or not.

Phil is a cunt but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the idea of the Abbott Bros being "the good ones." Like they didn't just stand there where Phil went off on his racist rants. Like they didn't happily wear and sell merch with the confederate flag on them. Bunch of rednecks and hillbillies the lot of em.

"Them"? Who?

If Paul McCartney and Ringo play some live shows together we can say this is a "Beatles Reunion"?

Max and Iggor Cavalera are touring, nobody is saying this is a Sepultura Reunion.

This is not Pantera, this is just about make some money.

Do people actually feel bad for the Abbott family because of this? I find that hard to believe.

Is Kerry even capable of playing Dime's solos? Over time I've come around to being a reluctant Slayer fan, but I'm not sure I've heard anything from him indicating he has that kind of precision.

Keep in mind that you're looking at this from a 2022 perspective. It wasn't nearly as controversial in the 90s, especially not in Texas. Stuck Mojo has some photoshoots from that time with one as well, and they were fronted by a black man. It was a different era, and a different area of the world.

Shame on you, Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown. Let Pantera and Amott brothers rest in peace. Show some respect to their memory and the music they made together.

I don’t think he can, which is why I said “entertaining.” One of the original members is no longer capable of singing some of the songs(you know the crowd is going to want “hollow” and “cemetery gates”), and he’s probably going to be drinking heavily, which won’t help matters. At least King’s unique style will give us some unintentional entertainment. Of course, there’s always the possibility of the vocalist’s drinking making him say something stupid.

Apparently it will be Zakk and Charlie. Certainly good choices as far as playing the parts in question, though I'm a little surprised Zakk agreed since you'd figure the tensions between Phil and the Abbott family would carry over to him somewhat. If it's just a tour to pay tribute to them I can get behind this, but if they actually decide to be Pantera outright again and make new music that will definitely leave me scratching my head to say the least.

I dunno, this feels like if Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell tried to reform The Experience after Hendrix died.

His songwriting is undoubtedly inconsistent now, but his lead playing has made a considerable comeback in the last 10 or so years. Some of the solos on Grimmest Hits are as good as anything he did in the Ozzy era to my ears, and he's definitely still capable of playing Dimebag-level parts. He's unfortunately become so defined by his 2000s era of constant pinch harmonics and endless wah that it's usually overlooked how great his playing can actually be when he puts proper effort into it, and there are definitely tracks (like Angel of Mercy or Darkest Hour from his second solo album) that show he's still the guy who wowed everyone on No More Tears.

I must've missed something... I don't think there's been any point in his career where Zakk would've struggled with Pantera's material. Was his playing really that bad in the 00s, or was it just that his output was considered subpar?

Funny to see all the comments about how this would never have happened if the brothers were still alive. Of course it wouldn't! If they were alive the full band would have got back together years ago

I'll go see this if it comes near me and the price is reasonable, but given the backlash it'll probably be dubbed as tribute rather than just Pantera

Why do you believe this? Vinnie literally despised Anselmo and didn't want anything to do with him.

He never forgave Anselmo, and I'm not sure anything would've changed if Dimebag was alive.

He never forgave him for Dimebag being killed, obviously if Dime was still alive then that wouldn't be an issue. I remember reading an interview with Rita before and she seemed pretty certain that had that night never happened there would have eventually been a reunion

Luckily I stopped liking Pantera about 20 years ago, otherwise I imagine I'd be pretty pissed off about this.
It's like Maiden reuniting without Steve and Bruce.

Phil has been doing Pantera-themed solo tours since 2019, Phil and Rex played together for years in Down, and the "Pantera reunion but with Zakk Wylde" was a meme a decade ago. All this announcement has done is highlight the metal community's collective amnesia about anything that happened between 1995 and five minutes ago.

Not having Dimebag and Vinnie around already makes this announcement lackluster and controversial. Anyway, it'll surely grab many young fans attention just for the sake of seeing a Pantera act live. Wating to see how this turns out.

LOL...awesome.

I will say, however, that the most recent Zakk/BLS records have been light years better than what precedes them. He's writing better songs and slowly moving away from the histrionics in recent years.

Dime had a tendency to abuse pinch harmonics too, just usually not as in quite over the top fashion as Zakk.
