To celebrate such an exceptional career, Edguy will be releasing a 2-CD/DVD-package called "Monuments" on July 14th via Nuclear Blast, which will include brand new material, the best tracks of the last 25 years, and old rarities that have never been published before. In addition, the DVD includes an entire show from the "Hellfire Club" tour in 2004 as well as the band's complete collection of video clips.

To say that I am looking forward to this would be an understatement.

First day buyer. I'll almost certainly get the version with the book. Have to wonder if the DVD is the show that got canned (except for those tracks on the Superheroes DVD). It's 12 years later, maybe they can get the footage up to scratch now.

I missed the version with the book. I'll probably end up getting that as well.

I wonder how many new songs it'll have--that's what I'll be keeping an eye on.

He might be the irritating frontman in metal but the last Avantasia album was actually pretty good. I'm feeling weird emotions. Could it be...excitement? For a new Tobias Sammet record? Holy shit, I think it is!

I didn't like Space Police as much as Age of the Joker, but I'm always interested in new Edguy. I'm liking the cover art a lot too.

A Facebook post has confirmed the live show on the DVD will be the full set from the Superheroes DVD. The setlist was (according to setlist wiki:

Mysteria
Under the Moon
Navigator
Wake Up the King
Land of the Miracle (think the audio of this was a bonus track on Rocket Ride)
Lavatory Love Machine
Vain Glory Opera
Drum Solo
Fallen Angels
The Piper Never Dies
Babylon
King of Fools
-----
Chalice of Agony (w/ Andre Matos)
Tears of a Mandrake
-----
Out of Control

That is a pretty kickass setlist. Should be cool. "Under the Moon" and "The Piper Never Dies" are two of their all-time best tracks.

If that's indeed the concert being included on the compilation, I'm sure going to buy it. The set list rules and Hellfire Club is still my favorite Edguy record by a mile. In addition to this, a live version of ''Chalice of Agony'' with André Matis is a rare pearl.

On a side note, which songs would you include on Edguy's compilation or what would be a realistic track list?

I guess it could look similar to something like this:

1. New Song
2. Sabre & Torch
3. Space Police
4. Love Tyger
5. Robin Hood (edited version)
6. Rock of Cashel
7. Ministry of Saints
8. Dragonfly
9. Dead or Rock
10. Superheroes
11. Save Me
12. Sacrifice

1. Mysteria
2. King of Fools
3. Lavatory Love Machine
4. Tears of a Mandrake (remastered)
5. Painting on the Wall (remastered) (edited version)
6. The Headless Game (remastered)
7. Land of the Miracle (remastered)
8. Vain Glory Opera (remastered)
9. Out of Control (remastered)
10. Wings of a Dream (remastered)
11. Key to My Fate (remastered)
12. Children of Steel (remastered)
13. Evil Minded (remastered)

They've played it quite a lot over the years. After "Mysteria", "King of Fools" and "Lavatory Love Machine", it's the most common Hellfire Club song (they played "Under the Moon" and "Navigator" more initially, but to my knowledge those two haven't been played since 2005). IIRC, they did an extended intro a few times like they did with the break in the middle of "The Pharaoh".

Don't think you're far wrong there. I think there'll be more new songs though. "Babylon" is surely a must. Not sure on "Dragonfly" or "Rock of Cashel" either. I think "Nobody's Hero" may get a look in. I reckon they might want one of their lengthy epics to get a slot too (probably "Piper"). They also recorded a lot of shows on the Space Police tour, so maybe they'll throw in a few rarer live tracks like "All the Clowns" or "Out of Vogue".

I'd love to know why they don't play "Under the Moon" live. It's easily one of the best songs Tobi has ever written.

Given its been a few years since the last album I'm hoping its going to end up a disk of new/unreleased material and one compilation album.

Hopefully it's an entire disc of new material, but bands don't typically do that. I will probably end up buying it either way, but this is definitely not what I was hoping for.

It's been the regular amount of time they typically wait between releases, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of new material on this. Be a bit disappointing if it's only a song or two anyway.

Hopefully the previously unreleased songs aren't just demos. Maybe there will be another "Judas at the Opera" track with a guest vocalist.

30 minutes of new material is pretty cool, shame they didn't write a full album. But maybe next year or so.

I was only expecting 2-3 new songs, so 30 mins is great!

30 minutes of new material is much better than I was expecting. That, along with a DVD and book means I will likely buy this. Now we just need another North America tour! It's crazy that I've managed to see Avantasia in North America more times than Edguy!!

A little tidbit of info on Facebook, Tobi has confirmed in the comments section of a recent post that there'll be five new songs and compares them to recent material:

"To be precise, it's five new songs, and I think they do rock. But if you think stuff like Space Police or Defenders Of The Crown was not good, I am not sure you will like our new stuff..."

If it's up to the quality of those songs mentioned, I'll be happy indeed.

I like both of those songs (especially Defenders), so I won't throw eggs at Tobi just yet.

Haven't really liked an Edguy album all the way through since Rocket Ride but thought Space Police had some great songs. Same thing with Avantasia. How do you have two bands that start out melodic power metal and turn them both into 80's hard rock worship.

Because it's the same guy doing both?

Honestly though, if you really listen to stuff like Vain Glory Opera, their current direction isn't a mystery at all. I think a lot of people listen to this stuff way too shallowly and just listen to the surface aesthetics rather than the songwriting. They were never really all about power metal with no outside influences. Even Theater of Salvation, their most power metal album, has "Headless Game," "Holy Shadows"...

Sounds ace. Track list is as expected. Glad to see the B sides get some acknowledgement. From what I gather, the 4 disc version has the DVD audio on 2 discs.

Got the earbook version ordered.

Ravenblack sounds cool. Got my eye on the earbook. I wonder if the only difference between the two earbooks at NB's EU shop is that the deluxe one comes with the canvas. They seem to have the same number of discs, both 160 pages, same artwork and same tracklist otherwise. If that's the case, I'll just order the regular earbook when I get home from work, since the canvas edition is literally almost twice as expensive without adding any A/V content.

1) That song might be better than everything on Space Police.
2) The standard earbook is also the 160 page book, correct?

I haven't been following Bon Tobi lately but this songs sounds not bad. I find that Avantasia is more my thing because of the array of vocal talents but I'm into the songwriting on this stuff too

I don't like that he's apparently falling into a very similar production style with every album now - I liked that he tried to make each one sound different and personable in the '00s. But yeah the quality is undeniable to me - just super solid, ass kicking heavy metal.

Yep, it says as much on the product page: http://www.nuclearblast.de/en/products/ ... rbook.html

And it seems both earbook editions get two bonus discs that are an audio version of the live show, but those are exclusive to the earbook(s). Pulling the trigger on the standard earbook now; excited to read the actual book portion of said earbook.

New song:

This song is taking some serious heat on YouTube/Facebook from what I'm seeing, but I have no idea what people are complaining about. Sounds exactly like modern Edguy to me. I enjoy the song, though obviously not comparable to the band's classic era.

The real shame is that this album officially has no distribution in Canada, so I'll probably be skipping it since there are only 5 new songs and I don't want to import it. And bands wonder why records don't sell :'(

It's more really good stuff from them as usual. Great main riff and Tobias is just owning it on the vocals. It's just a fun, kick ass rock song. Unsure why people wouldn't like it if they like anything else from the band, but eh, not in the business of paying attention to dumb ass internet commenters anymore.

These new songs sound like the Space Police style, very polished, but the songwriting is a bit freer and it sounds like they were having more fun on these. A bit less generic I guess. It's just slightly better than that album in every aspect.

Like I said before, it's not my favorite Edguy song, but it wouldn't be out of place on Age of the Joker. Tobi must have changed something with his singing, because he sounds better than he has in a long time.
