With a sense of shock I'm letting all of you know of the passing today of former DEATH bassist Scott Clendenin. Scott had some health challenges in the last few years but was optimistic about his prospects. Of course he was the skilled player on The Sound of Perseverance DEATH album, and recently participated in two DTA live runs, in 2012 and 2013, including the highlight of his acoustic guitar in a poignant rendition of Voice of the Soul. Our thoughts go out to Scott's family at this difficult time. ERIC


Scott was a friend of mine. We kinda fell out of touch the last couple years, and we didn't talk nearly as much as we should have, but he was a good man, a great musician, and a real, genuine person. I'm gonna miss him a lot.

Rest in peace, dude.

Man that suck, he is my favorite death bassist. Weird that I already been listening to a lot of control denied and the sound of perseverance these past couple of days. May he rest in peace. Shame the good die young.

Absolutely loved his playing on TSoP and really wish he had more musical output. Was cool to see him play with Death To All (if only through Youtube). RIP.

Well, this sucks. Scott was always in my head as not-Steve DiGiorgio but his performance on The Sound of Perseverance is one of the best I've ever heard in death metal. RIP and condolences to his family.

To my understanding, some of the basslines in TsoP were written by Di Giorgio, since he had a bit of hand in the pre-production. He was in fact the one who would record the album but moved to another city and was quite far from Chuck. He recuited him for the Control Denied record tho.

It's a shame, he was great :(

I always wondered why he wasn't doing other projects. I am guessing he wasn't interested because with his chops and resume, he would have had no problem finding jobs.

I've wondered that about a lot of the guys who were in latter-day Death. I guess it really was Chuck directing everything and holding it all together, since it seems like most of the others left after Death's dissolution.

Yeah, it seems so. Schuldiner had the ability to surround himself with talent and more importanly, to get the very best out of those around him.

Even in the case of a legend like Hoglan, who has been extremely productive, nothing he ever did before or after Death rivals those albums, IMO.

Eh, I disagree, especially since the overwhelming majority of what he's done has been quite different from those two Death albums. I personally think his shining performance is on City by Strapping Young Lad, with Alien a very close second. Not saying his performances on ITP and Symbolic aren't excellent, because they are, just that they aren't the pinnacle of his recorded history.

What??? His drumming on "Time Does Not Heal" is some of the best thrash drumming ever recorded. Not to mention that he probably wrote most of the stuff on that album himself, including playing some guitars on the album.
