Spoiler: show
Hey Guys,

I'm doing a research project on the Decline of Pop Metal in America in the early 90's & I'd really appreciate anyone, fan or not, to take this survey. It's only 9 short questions & it would really benefit my college work. Thanks a lot!

It would help to have a definition of what "pop metal" is actually supposed to mean.

Since I've been on metal forums, I've seen about 200 people post questionaires for their next college paper. And it is ALWAYS the decline of 80s hair metal in the 90s. Something about it just sounds all academic and shit. It's always some college kid who just found out how great LA Guns and Warrant were - so of course they are trying to wedge it into some elective course they're taking.

Exigence, I've also seen quite often this kind of research into the "causes and origins" of 2nd wave Norwegian black metal. And imo, it's easier to turn that into some academic-sounding endeavour.

OP, I took your survey, but... you'll have trouble pulling any kind of useful trends/correlations out of such open questions.

I thought pop metal was about metalcore and deathcore until I saw question 5 asking whether I thought thrash caused a decline in it. Now I have no idea what you could mean by pop metal, especially after you already listed glam as something separate. Decided not to answer as I don't understand the questions.

And I don't really see glam metal as a genre. I'm going to assume you mean glam rock.

I tried to take the survey but I didn't know if he meant pop metal as in something like Disturbed or something along the lines of a Freedom Call.

Glam rock has little to nothing in common with glam/hair/pop metal.

This.

There's no such thing as pop metal, or at least there isn't a sub-genre of metal that is widely acknowledged under said moniker.

I did your survey. Enjoy.

Note: Pop in my understanding is (and always was) any music or art that is widely accepted by average public masses. In music it is any product that is worldwide sold and purchased and amassed to more than couple of millions records sold by public. Pop metal is therefore in my view any heavy music record/band that achieved that level. Metallica is, according to this, pop metal. Nirvana is, according to this, pop metal. Bon Jovi is, according to this, pop metal. Deep Puple, is according to this, pop metal. Voivod is NOT, according to this, pop metal.

Wikipedia disagrees with you.
Quote:
Glam metal (also known as hair metal[1] and often used synonymously with pop metal[2]) is a subgenre of hard rock[1] and heavy metal. It combines elements of these genres with punk rock and pop music, adding catchy hooks and guitar riffs, while borrowing from the aesthetic of 1970s glam rock.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glam_metal

I don't even consider glam metal a real genre. I do use the label glam rock though for bands like Guns N' Roses, Ratt, L.A. Guns etc. And that wikipedia article cites GNR and Ratt as examples of glam metal.

I just use heavy metal to describe the metal bands like W.A.S.P., and Quiet Riot etc if those are the types of bands you are thinking of for 'glam metal'.

Anyway this just highlights how vague this survey is.

Glam metal indeed isn't a genre, but calling those bands glam rock is even worse. In fact, it's as bad as when people call those bands "'80s metal". :ugh:
