The two text files contain an analysis of band names, which are listed at the Metal Archives.
Those are the files in question:

Band names alphabetically.txt
size: 527kb

Band names numerically.txt
size: 527kb

What they contain is the result of a PHP-script with several Regex (Regular Expressions). The information for this has been taken from the Metal Archives. What had been done is an atomization of the band names into single words and a summary of these. The second file lists the total amount of each word, while the first has them listed alphabetically.

These are top ten words in the band names:

Black 859

Death 792

Dark 587

Dead 461

Blood 454

Hate 312

Hell 277

Eternal 273

Dawn 260

Soul 251

Should someone try to check the information for validity and might rely on the search engine of the Metal Archives for this, then a different result will be the case. This has to do with the way the band names are dealt with there. While the list section has the band names as they are, the search engine has also access to different types of spelling and name changes. This cannot be covered in any meaningful way, because getting this type of information would require an intolerable amount of research and cross checking.

Everything is also available at the Internet Archive:

Why does the word "bestial" not appear despite 70+ entries?

it does:
Quote:
Your 70
Requiem 70
Broken 70
Bestial 70
Demise 69
Cryptic 69
Misery 68
Legacy 68

and ... the search engine offers different results, because there also additional band names can be accessed. My information are from here:

Try searching *fen*, that's how they got to that large number.

Hm ... good question. This should actually not have happened.

No Idea where this comes from ... there seems to be an error in the algorithm.
I will look into this.

Oh coolio. I love metrics like this and it's neat to look at. Should've known Black was the first result.

I have found out the source of the error and I will post an update of the files tomorrow. I have also prepared an algorithm for pattern searching, which I will post on the weekend... hopefully ... maybe.

Right now I can't think of any decent band with the word "soul" on the name, maybe I'm missing something but damn it jaja

No matter how overused these words are I'd still put up with them if it meant no sentence band names. Thankfully most of those pertain to sub-genres I have no interest in but there's always the possibility it could catch on. These names belong at best as album titles.

It is. 98 "Goat"s + a lot of compound Goat(something), check the alphabetical list.

My question is, among the 98 bands with the word "Goat", are the compound words counted, or only "Goat" as a separate word? In other words, does the algorithm search for "goat" or "goat*" (or perhaps even "*goat*"), and is it case-sensitive?

Actually, never mind, I did a search for "*goat*" and got 261 results. "goat*" gives 205, so I just answered my own question. But simply "goat" gives 119 bands, so some bands have been added to the Archives I guess.

Also, fourteen bands have "black" and "death" in their names, eight being simply called "Black Death".

I have fixed this error. There are two new files online and they are closer to the actual results.

Chinese and Cyrillic words, to name some examples, still fall through the loophole, as do combinations of letters and symbols or numbers and symbols.

###############

I still wonder where to find these bands in the alphabetical band list.
