Been too freakin' long for a new Cynic album.

I must be one of the 4% of people here that really enjoyed Re-Traced and Carbon Based Anatomy, so I'm especially looking forward to this release.

Awesome news. Traced In Air is one of my all time favorite albums, and while I found Re-Traced to be a pretty much vapid exercise, I also really liked Carbon Based Anatomy. This is going to be great, I'm sure of it.

Indeed. I like how they always use the same godlike light being/alien for their full length album covers.

Though I like these first two more.

Very cool! While I enjoyed Traced in Air, I really liked where they were going with Carbon Based Anatomy. Sure they seem to continue to dial back the metal, but it just sounds so good. Really excited to see where they go with this album.

I'll check this out, but Carbon Based Anatomy and Retraced were pale shadows of a once great band. Hopefully they'll get the heavier elements back.

Hope they've dropped the vocoder... I like their other albums and EP's, but they need to do something new.

All their album covers look pretty (cosmically) vaginal to me... I think it goes with the music though, and I don't mean that disparagingly.
Although I agree, "Focus" was their peak for me... the recent stuff is okay, I guess. Not intelligent enough to be fusion, not aggressive enough to be good otherwise.

Sweet. I always preferred their full lengths to their half-hearted demos and EPs. The album title is kinda :ugh: though.

Fuck yes! Cynic is one of my top bands, really looking forward to this! I enjoyed all of their albums, especially Traced in Air! And I also liked the direction they were going with Carbon Based Anatomy.

Sounds lame. I really like Focus and some songs from Traced in Air but they have been lightening their sound too much for my taste.

Btw, at work we eat some vegetable omelettes that look like the cover. I knew Malone was getting into the vegetarian realm.

Post subject:  Re: New Cynic album on Valentine's Day

We'll see how this turns out. I was less than impressed with Re-Traced and Carbon Based Anatomy, too much of a departure of their signature sound in my opinion. I doubt they'll ever return to how they sounded on Focus but hopefully it's at least on the same level of Traced in Air and not further removed from metal.

Post subject:  Re: New Cynic album on Valentine's Day

Don't get your hopes too high. Carbon-Based Anatomy was already an evolution of the sound present on Traced In Air, giving much more room to an ethereal and almost world music vibe that was already slightly present in TIA. It's going to end up sounding closer to Gordian Knot but with the Cynic trademark sound, which by the way has been present in every work they made aside from Re-Traced. But that was a train wreck really so it can be ignored.

My point being that they're going to keep moving away from the metallic aspects of their sound, although they'll most likely still maintain a bit of weight on the drums occasionally and some more or less heavy guitars here and there. But I wouldn't be surprised if they'd continue their route towards sounding closer to Mahavishnu Orchestra, as that seems to be where they're going for. Can't say that I'd be troubled with such an evolution, although I'd love to see the metallic elements at least partially retained as to give it a more up-to-date sound.

Now... why the hell on Valentine's Day?! :D

I dunno, maybe they want us to only date people who also likes Cynic. Metal purity and all.

Post subject:  Re: New Cynic album on Valentine's Day

I wish I could get excited about this but I prefer the older (more metallic) CYNIC style that they pioneered. Luckily we have MINDWORK who are doing good things along those lines and hopefully a good ATHEIST record with Choy back on bass. Not to mention, if you want something a bit more like their demos we have EXOCOSM.

You find yourself so funny that you had to quote yourself?

Anyway it will probably be even further departure from the earlier albums, but if it is good music I doesn't really matter. Bands that don't evolve become boring anyway.

I guessed that because it will be released on Valentine's Day it would be some sort of concept album about love. Its probably a good thing that im wrong.

Can't think of a single band that would get lamer than new Cynic due to "not evolving", to be honest.

The "bent" on the title isn't related to "bending", it's related to "resolute". As in "Kindly determined to free us". At least that's how someone knowing Cynic's "spiritual path" would read it. ;)

Is this still a metal band? Thought they ditched that ages ago.

Naw, I wouldn't really necessarily call them metal if we are going by Carbon-Based Anatomy. I love it, but I could see how people wouldn't like it. I was never a huge fan of Focus, though, so maybe that's why I've warmed up to new Cynic so much.

I love Focus and Traced in Air. Carbon-based Anatomy is pretty cool, but it's too short (well, it's just an EP after all). Anyways, I can't wait for this.

Though, if they go the softer route, I'd like it better if they put more fusion in their sound as opposed to prog rock. Although that's just how I feel.
