Anyway, name some metal songs written/recorded by non-metal bands (according to MA's standards on what they consider metal and what they don't consider metal).

In Your Face is about as close to metal as hard rock can be without actually turning into glammy heavy metal. I rarely like the sleazy stuff from the 80s, but that is a good album in its own genre: surprisingly guitar-driven, quite innovative for its time, and overall good music for driving.

The rest of their works are more clearly hard rock, at least the stuff I've heard.

They have a very strong Led Zeppelin influence; just listen to Lenny's vocals on the song "What Love Can Be." I really do think that had their debut album included more songs that sounded like "Do You Like It" then they sure as hell would have been welcome here at the Archives. I do give them props for being able to know how not to cross the line between hard rock and blues rock.

The Bitter End by Sum 41. It's total 80s Metallica worship.

I'm still convinced that Creatures Of The Night by KISS is a lost Saxon album in disguise.

Pain for Pleasure by Sum 41 has an old school metal feel to it as well. Sum 41 did this a couple of times actually I think. There is also grab the devil by the horns and f*ck him up the ass by Sum 41 too.

In This Defiance by Strife (NY hardcore). Especially the drumming. It always seemed almost like Thrash Metal.

About Kiss' Creatures of the Night, I don't get the Saxon thing but it certainly is the closest to metal Kiss ever got.

There were a LOT of punk bands back in the 80s that flirted with the speed/thrash metal sound: Agnostic Front, Crumbsuckers, Dr. Know, DRI, etc. First time I heard Agnostic Front's "The Eliminator" (a good example) I thought they were a thrash metal band.

And plenty of glam rock bands from the same period that had material that could have easily passed for metal. It was often a pretty fine line anyway.

Nay, very Zeppelin-y. It is indeed the only CaC song that doesn't make me want to cease living. When I heard it I thought "Man, maybe this band isn't as bad as I thought". Then I listened to a few other songs and almost hung myself. Total fluke of a song.

After listening to the first half of this track (I'd listen to the whole thing but my power went out...), I must say that their music really doesn't match their name. I'll have to look into these guys regardless.

Hell is for Children by Pat Benatar.
This song is so dark, especially from an artist best known for catchy classic pop-rock. The fast part during the bridge could have passed for speed metal, not to mention the serious and depressing lyrics about child abuse.

Atomic Punk by Van Halen. It's not punk, and not even that great of a song, but it is metal.

Phil Elverum's bands Mt Eerie and and The Microphones occasionally descend into metal territory. Mt Eerie especially definetly has black metal influences. The non metal stuff is great too but here are a couple songs that get metal at some point or another

The microphones have a heavy ass song called Samurai Sword which unfortunately is not on youtube but check out the album the Glow as it mixes heavy moments with great indie rock. Truly a great album and band.

Zepellin's Immigrant Song always struck me as metal

They eventually put out two glam metal albums in the late '70s, not really my style but they are pretty remarkable in that they sound a lot like bands which came later in the 1980s.

I also think Zeppelin's Communication Breakdown is pretty metal. A pretty fast low E palm muting guitar riff. Kinda like Paranoid, except this one is in the open position, like a lot of thrash.

And I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I've always thought of Iron Butterfly's In A Gadda Da Vida as the first ever metal song.

Europe - In the Future to Come

^A lot of that album is metal, and so is the second Europe album. Checkout that song as well as The King Will Return, Seven Doors Hotel, and Scream of Anger if you think that Europe are nothing more than "The Final Countdown".

Not so much an unpopular opinion, but the rest of the songs on the album aren't very metal so there's little chance of them getting on the Archives. Their later albums are pretty hard rock and less metal, if you separate the genres.

Personally I find "Tales of Brave Ulysses" by Cream pretty epic, the wah might kind of make people say it's not metal though. Other contenders would be "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf, also "Better by You, Better than Me" by Spooky Tooth.

Wikipedia even says that they earlier played power metal . All right, the guitar alone is may somehow be close to power sometimes, but Europe is simply not such a band.

Alice Cooper has a few. Notably from the Kane Roberts era ('86-'87). Songs like "Roses on White Lace", "Freedom" and "The World Needs Guts" sound like metal to me. "Halo of Flies" has a few elements that make me think of metal too.

unfortunately there isn't any link for this song...it starts as ska (?) and then it quickly becomes a roaring metal thing like early Iron Maiden's "Prowler" with lots of guitar solos...the band is Impact, an unknown romanian band active around 1984. You can find 1 song on Youbute ("Izdatul") that is beautiful but it has nothing to do with this strange metal thing
