I've never actually heard or attempted pronunciation of the Boston Celtics, because I don't watch, nor care about basketball.

I've always pronounced them "a basketball team I don't care about".....

It's unclear whether Mutiilation is pronounced "Mutilation" or "Mu-tee-lation", so I just say "Mutilation" to avoid embarrassment.

Also, I know Varg pronounces "Burzum" with a long "u" sound and a kind of weird rolled "r". Tolkein pronounces it with long u's without the rolled "r".
Me and most metalheads I know pronounce it "Berzum" out of habit, and because any English speaker would sound ridiculous saying it the way Varg does.

Gallhammer pronounce it 'buusum'. :P

Meshuggah
Vildhjarta
Woods of Ypres
Eluveitie
Malodorous
Aegaeon

I mispronounced all the bands above for years, but since then I've fixed my pronunciation for them (well...... most of them, most of the time I forget how Eluveitie is even pronounced)
But what I really hate the most is that when you pronounce something a new way, it looses its original meaning and nostalgia you once had for the band or word when you pronounced it a way once upon a time.
It's like something new to you because of finding out that you were pronouncing it wrong all along and that old pronunciation was what you held all the memories with.

"dee-ih" for Deity make sense.

Deicide - Dee-ih-side
Deiphago - Dee-ih-fa-go

It's uh-nall. Not that the correct pronunciation stopped my friends from coming up with a medical condition of the bowels.

My biggest problem is with Amesoeurs. Am-eh-sorz? Am-ee-syurs? Too many vowels :annoyed:

Amesoeurs is a mix of "âmes" (soul) and "soeurs" (sisters). Basically it's our version of "soulmates" and it's pronounced as if you were speaking both word separately:
Ahm-sir (as in "sir yes sir").

All those are of course prononunced with our weird, throaty "r" which is a bitch to articulate for English speakers.

Supposedly Taake is "toh-kae".

I believe Necrophagist is "neh-kro-fay-jist".

I've always said "Drood-kh", though don't know how accurate that is.

Thrawsunblat. Is the "t" at the end silent?

For Impiety, I've heard various people say "im-PEE-uh-tee", though I believe it should be "im-PIE-uh-tee". Though I don't know how it sounds with a Singaporean accent.

So many Tolkien words sound better with the "s-" sound; alas, the "k-" sound is almost always correct. (I still mess up Celeborn. Frequently.)

Regarding Taake, I think several people are just rendering a similar pronounciation using different letters - it's hard to write down the "aa" sound in a way that makes sense in English.

I've always said it an-a-THEE-ma. I don't think I could ever get used to saying it an-ATH-ema, even if it is the correct pronunciation.

I've never understood why one would pronounce it that way. I wasn't entirely sure of the correct pronunciation for a long time, and if I was asked, I probably would've blurted out something only vaguely reminiscent of the correct one, but that one never even crossed my mind. I probably would've pronounced it an-ath-ema without the correct emphasis.

I suppose people see the "thema" bit and think of the word "theme". I think I may have even said that way when I was younger.

Esoteric is another one I remember briefly pronouncing wrong when I was a teenager. I said it "e-SOT-e-ric" instead of "ee-so-TEH-ric"... :-)

I too always said Selteec Frost and Seereeth Un-goal. It just comes naturally with the French accent (do you guys say "the Kelts" referring to the Celts, too? It sounds so wrong to my ears, I'm not sure I can ever get used to that).

droneriot wrote:
I'm German, so I pretty much mispronounce anything with a "th" in it. :P

The "th" (which can actually mark up to a half-dozen completely different sounds), the "short vowels" and the whole concept of "emphasis" are fucking harsh to us Frenchies too (except for those in the South who basically sing-talk like Italians, we just say each syllable at the exact same volume). I'll just never be able to pronounce "a bit" like a native English speaker can; if I deliberately force it so it doesn't sound like "a beat", then I just end up saying "a bet" instead.

No, since it's French, it's pronounced like Antoine said. I'd just add that the "zage" part has an A as in "cat", a silent E and no implied D in the G; but I guess that can be tough for English speakers to pronounce.

You probably misheard, the T is definitely pronounced. A guy whose name is Al has a date with the second half of the word "incest", that's it.

Besides, contrary to what it says in the additional notes here and to what the guy himself might apparently claim, he obviously picked the name up from Alceste, he just removed the silent E from the original French spelling. The most obvious reference is the main character from Molière's "Le Misanthrope" which, as a Frenchman who went to school and is at least a little into metal, he knew both from studying Molière as a kid (mandatory) and from the French band Misanthrope using it in every other song's lyrics for a solid decade before he started his own project. So no, Stéphane can't really make up his own pronunciation, in this case, not without being ridiculous at least.

The 't' will indeed fall silent most of the time, but that's solely because people are talking to fast. And aren't "ses" and "ces" pronounced the same in English (access/assess)? Or very close to one another at least?

Unless he used a hard 'c' (as in al-kes) in which case, holy crap I've been pronouncing it wrong for years even though it's my first language.

Edit: LegendMaker has a way better explanation just above, disregard my part about "kes/ces".

I was referring more to the d'Hiver part of the name. Perhaps you can shed some light on that? I was under the impression that an ending like -er would always be pronounced as é. I might be wrong as I didn't pay much attention in French class.
I'm not a native English speaker btw
