I've gotta agree with Folkemon. Nobody beats Kreator at thrashing.

Whoops, I never noticed that. But, again, that's a debatable statement.

Yo M_O_T the riffs from Kreator may sound funny to you because a lot of their riffs seem like a massive "fuck you!" to music theory (not actually, but damn they can be weird). When I was learning a bunch of songs from Extreme Aggression, some of those riffs jumped out to me as being written so oddly. Like, what the fuck kind of scale are some of them in? Of course, I would love for someone who is well-versed in theory to explain it, because it's honestly interesting, but that's how I see it. I think by then they had really got the hang of their instruments and were able to write some honestly amazing riffs despite being homegrown angry Germans.

Of course, I agree with Kreator being the riff masters. I love all of those riffs from the first five. The last three of the first five contain some of the best riffs and songs ever made in metal, and I won't even start about those legendary thrash breaks from PtK. One of my all-time favorite thrash bands.

Do you know why that's my username? Because when I signed up, I made the noob mistake of reviewing Master Of Puppets, and at the time, I was only into thrash metal, and I was always shite at coming up with OG usernames. But just in case anyone's missed it, I will clarify this for the millionth time; I am not a bloody master of thrash, for fuck's sake.

Plus Kreator is great and all but any thrash "master" knows damn well that Sodom is the superior German band!

I'm still waiting for you to clarify which BG songs from the past the other songs from At The Edge of Time are ripping off.

Sodom are probably my favourite old thrash band; in my mind they've never released a bad or even mediocre album.

Sodom - Sodom

Very menacing and savage.

Do note that this isn't the real deal HM-2, only the Behringer "copy". Still, I'm in my room getting a damn-near spot-on Entombed sound, so I ain't complaining. A little bit of playing around with the settings, throwing my Kramer in B standard, and I got a really cool tone with it!

Holy shit, those reviews aren't kidding... one of the least aggressive metal releases I've ever heard. Those vocals are whiny as hell too, and they suck.

I've been reading them, and they're great. Short, funny, and gives me a nice rundown of the album. I may have to give No More Color another shot.

Another shot? As in you seriously didn't like it the first time? Dude. You're a bass player. I can understanding not getting Darkness Descends, but you have no excuse not to worship the majesty of Ron Royce.

I didn't really give it a proper shot to begin with, so another one has been due for a few weeks. It didn't click immediately, but I was digging it, so I may end up loving it. I'll throw it on right now.

Also, that reminds me, the Black Prophecies video is coming soon

Iron Maiden - "Seventh Son"

For some reason I had an issue with the solo section's placement in this track until just a few weeks ago, even though I never found the very same structure puzzling in "To Tame a Land." Weird... At any rate, the whole song is quite fantastic, and I'm glad I realize that now.

Groove metal not (completely) derived from Pantera? That's novel. It's also good stuff.

They had more in common with a band like Tar. Before Helmet, Hamilton played in Band of Susans and did stuff with Glenn Branca. That should give you an idea of where they were coming from.

Atrocity-March of the Undying(from the album Okkult)

Good track from a great work. I have the feeling that this album is a very overlooked one, its a pity because tough its not as good as Atlantis its a pretty interesting cd.

Dynfari - Hafsjór
Found these guys in one of those internet wormholes. Icelandic Atmospheric duo. Tons of atmosphere with wretched vocals and hollow clean sections that pair nicely. Kind of like if Ecailles Alcest met Winterfylleth. Powerful stuff.

I think Taake might be my favorite black metal band. I don't like this as much as the other material, but it's still damn good.

Why is that exactly? Are you unfamiliar with the concept of the album?

EDIT: I'm on my phone so I can't go into TOO much detail but I adore this album so I'm gonna spell it out anyway just in case you or anybody else is getting the wrong message from the outro.

As you know, the chorus goes

"Maybe someday when this bloody skull has dried
I'll know our city is in ruins when our greatest source of pride
A monument of dicks and ribs and the gender crowns we wore
Where underneath a plaque will read "No woman is a whore""

Taken literally I can see how somebody could take that as meaning liberal/progressive attitudes towards gender and sexuality will lead to the downfall of civilization, but Kezia doesn't take place in our universe. In that world, it's an oppressively religious and puritanical/sexist society that has condemned this Kezia woman to death for a crime that goes unspecified but is strongly hinted to be sexual in nature (prostitution, adultery, maybe just "unapproved" sex at all). The songs are split, with the first three being from the perspective of the priest who condemned her, the next three being the prison guard set to carry out the execution, the next three from Kezia herself, and the last one being an overall epilogue. So that chorus is basically taking place in her last moments before being executed and becoming a martyr figure for owning her sexuality and rebelling against the sexist society she lives in.

So really it means something more like "Some day long after I'm dead, I know all you pricks will finally be gone and society for the better when we become a society based on equality that doesn't look down on women". That's how I've always interpreted it.

Unless of course you already knew that and that's the part you have a problem with.

You what? Those riffs aren't anything particularly new, sure, but the Sabbath vibes are great. Not so fond of the concept of rap metal at all, but again, there's almost nothing here that's actually rap, just an angry black dude shouting over some good old crossover/hard rock riffs.

I'll vouch for that first Body Count album. Indeed, it has absolutely no rapping in it at all and what is present (crossover, I guess) is done quite well. Their later albums aren't so great though.

Batushka - Litourgiya

What an amazing album.
