Hammers of Misfortune - The Blood Ax Speaks

Blazingly original music. You don't get this kind of shit every day - love the weird narrative storytelling the music is built around, the excellent guitar work...great album.

Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom

:headbang: So much neck-snappery! Each new moment is as fun to listen to as the last, that's the thing.

Wintersoul - "Shadows of Death" from Frozen Storm Apocalypse

Amazing album. I am kicking myself for not picking it up sooner.

Great band. I should probably buy that album too.

NP: Hazeroth - Frykt Ikke

Alright, but not nearly as good as the original Drottnar song.

Immolation - Infectuous Blood

The early Immolation material is quite removed from their trademark style, but it sure is cool stuff.

Threshold - Choices

I have to admit, with the exception of Psychedelicatessen, I haven't paid much attention to Threshold's pre-Dead Reckoning material. Which is a shame, because I'm already really digging this. Just as slick and energetic as I could have hoped. Very fun. I've already got Subsurface lined up and ready to go after this.

Falls of Rauros - Ancestors of Smoke

Hmm.. Interesting. I have to say that the folksy country interludes actually fit really well with the whole cascadian, melodic black metal stuff. The album, unfortunately is neither more the sum of it's parts, or brilliant in any way, simply an enjoyable listen and a bit of an oddity. I'm assuming they got the genre mash up idea from Panopticon's flirtations with blue grass. I think the whole despondent country thing fits better than blue grass in this frame work, but Falls of Rauros just failed in writing anything that was particularly engaging, past the superficial "huh?" factor. At least Roads to North was packing some solid riffs and emotional weight.

I have more or less the same feeling, I was expecting much more. There are some nice moments but overall the albums fails to capt my attention. On the other hand Panopticon´s new opus seems to be more solid but I am not absolutely convinced. More time and listens are needed.

Synkvervet-Angelfall

Absolutely surprised, I had no idea that a new album was coming. It sounds slightly different because now they have a complete line-up with a female singer, but the keys/arrangements seem to be great as in the first album. Lets listen to it!

I was going to create a post but I though that almost no one was interested hehe.

I am a total fanboy of the debut so I dont expect to like this one at much as that one but I would be happy if it doesn't disappoint me. A future purchase, indeed. :D

I'm neither convinced by Falls of Rauros.

Mentors - You Axed for It!

I remember being really impressed by this album musically when I first heard it. While the vocals certainly are comically bad (but also have a charm of their own), there is plenty of truly good riffs and leads on here, and some solid drumming. I was expecting really bad stuff, as is the norm with most "offensive for the sake of being offensive" bands, but this is certainly an exception. Good shit.

Svartidaudi - The Perpetual Nothing (Flesh Cathedral)

This is a suffocating, bleak album. Finally a black metal album with a notable bass performance! Hypnotic is an adjective that gets thrown around a lot but Flesh Cathedral is truly so - they hook you with a crazy, dissonant BM riff, bring in the groove with the drums and proceed to bury you beneath tracks of hazy guitars, a chugging and propulsive bass, some really subtle keys and nice guttural vocals.

Fantastic album.

Darkspace -- 4.18
Interesting music on this latest release by them. As this would also be the first of them that I have a chance to listen to this is even more the case. Quite astounding how they have created such long compositions with a sole focus on rather fast paced black metal.

Dawnbringer - Nobody There

New Dawnbringer's growing on me - especially this song; nice slow-burning, stripped down stuff. The description of Chris Black as a "metal singer-songwriter" is really accurate and explains why this band is so fucking good. Just honest, raw music.

Nokturnal Mortum - Perun's Celestial Silver

Again. Just so epic. Any Ukrainan or Russina who can tell me what they are chanting in between the verses on that slow/folky part? On the NeChrist is abit louder. Something like "hey nanana" chanted over and over, almost like I imagine Native American chanting to go.

It's a quite peculiar band, yes.

Yeah. There's something quite easy to relate to in those European Eastern bands.

Rivers Of Nihil - Place Of Serpents

So much contemporary technical death metal either bores me to tears or bludgeons me into a stupor so color me surprised that Rivers Of Nihil actually take a beat to craft some catchy hooks. Reminds me of Winds Of Creation era Decapitated. Vocalist needs work though, sounds a bit to generically tough-bro.

Furia - Ptaki ida

Is it just me, or is it that Poles have at some point started making quirky and kind of weird black metal that is thoroughly excellent? This year Odraza and Genius Ultor also realeased albums that can be described like this.

Virgin Steele - Trail of Tears

I just so happened across a Marriage of Heaven and Hell Parts 1/2 double pack at the record store yesterday. I've never heard a single note from these guys in my life, but this is turning out to be an excellent blind purchase. Blistering riffs at an epic galloping pace and gritty, powerful vocals always make for a winning combination.

King's X - "Groove Machine"

One of the most under-appreciated bands of the last few decades, IMO.

I don't understand why so many people seem to hate keyboard-laden black metal.

Shameless Demigod worship. There's a riff in "Inhuman Incarnation" that sounds like it was lifted from Slumber of Sullen Eyes. Brilliant stuff

Yah, I really like this album. Plus it has a pretty brutally scuzzy production without losing any power.

Sacrocurse - All Existence Perishes

Fuck. This rules. Brutal, malevolent, brimming with a violent power and atmosphere, killer vocals and some cool solos scattered among the debris of whatever is in it's path. Holy fucking shit :metal:

Timur Mutsuraev - Bogu Daymokh
When I'm home alone in the mornings before school, I like to sing along to this guy when I'm high on coffee. My goal is to speak Russian with a slight Caucasian accent, and I figure listening to Chechen bard music might help with that... it's probably put me on a no-fly list somewhere in the country though, so there's a price to pay for this..

Summoning - The Legend of the Master Ring

I can't figure out this keyboard melody. It swings like a pendulum between epic, happy, dramatic and sad. It just twists and turns in a way I couldn't grasp when first listening to it.

I have just started listening to X Japan's Art Of Life. In fact, I've been binging on them quite a bit recently.

It's like half an hour long, so I'm strapping myself in for quite a journey. I especially like the 9 minute piano solo that devolves into a cacophony of random piano stabs, like someone took a sledgehammer to it. It's the kind of song that keeps your attention for the duration. Top quality stuff! :hyper:
