Sabbat - Envenom

So many good riffs, and a really energetic, almost jovial vibe on this record. It's great.

Theatre of Tragedy - A Hamlet for a Slothful Vassal

I remember being so blown away by this song when I first heard it. Now I can see that it is way below what they would later produce. It's simple and catchy. Very nostalgic for me.

Suffocation - Bloodchurn

Am I alone in liking Dave Culcross's drums so much more than Mike Smith's?

Apostate - "Trapped in a Sleep" from Trapped in a Sleep

Not a bad listen at all, but it isn't doing much to wake me up this morning.

Ancient Vvisdom - "The Devil's Work" from Sacrificial

Just got this in the mail today. I've heard some awful things about this album, and while I agree that it is a definite new direction from the band, I don't find it to be that awful. It seems like a progression in sound they were toying with a tiny bit on Deathlike and decided to go full force with on this release. Different? Yes. Enjoyable? For me anyway, very.

Good to hear! I've yet to get around to Sacrificial yet, but I was actually a huge fan of Deathlike. This is one of those bands that I just liked immediately.

Sacrificial is a pretty big departure from what they did on the first two records, but likewise, I really enjoyed it. Highlights are "The Devils Work" and "Worm Ridden Skull". The record might be "metal-enough" for the 'Archives now, although I'm not certain.

NP: Danzig - Self-Titled

Picked this album up a while ago when one of my friends came to the pub with a pile of CD's he didn't want any more; picked up a Raven album at the same time.

Obliveon - Coercive Currents

Carnivore Mothermouth is my easily my favourite Obliveon album, it'll be interesting what style they go for if they record another album.

They're currently recording one and the guys are in top form, I've seen them this summer and it was awesome.

Sweeet!

Frightmare - Friday the 13th
I meant to listen to Frightmare on Halloween, but forgot. Oh well, Frightmare is great at any time of year.

Still one of my favourite doom-gothic songs. I would say that their best album in this genre is the second one, but this debut is very special too.

Wodesnthrone- Leódum on Lande

What a beautiful track for these rainy and cold days.

Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations

I know the album is well respected by pretty much everyone, but one specific point I feel is underrated is the sheer tone of the guitars in particular the rhythm section. They sound powerful as fuck. I think that's why I love this album so much, despite not being very big into NWOBHM.

Danzig - Not of This World, off Danzig

A rocking tune put through a filter of Sabbath, and a few doses of Morrisony hollering. Lovely.

Warbeast - Nightmares In The Sky

Kind of a death-thrash supergroup w/ex. members of Gammacide, Rigor Mortis, and Hammer Witch. An excellent, energetic tune that isn't totally retro in style or execution.

Almost exactly in rhythm with Image

Bolzer - Entranced by the Wolfshook

A year later, and I still can't get enough of the main riff in this song. With talk of a full length dropping in 2015 and an American tour (from the mouth of KzR himself), I'm feeling pretty excited.

Still waiting for Invictus to release the Roman Acupuncture demo on CD!

Anaal Nathrakh - The One Thing Needful
I like this song. The new album isn't as awful as everyone is making it out to be but it's definitely tied for their weakest.

Venom - Bloodlust

I just realised how similar Cronos' vocals on the 1981/early '82 stuff sounds like Christopher Bowes' rougher vocals in Alestorm. Pretty cool little similarity there.

Wrathchild America - Climbin' the Walls

It's a shame they changed their sound, and fizzled out.

This song is great. Glam/hair done right. The album is really just filled with classic songs.

The latest Varathron album. Really a terrific record, lots of the ancient '90s Greek mysticism and mayhem in there but makes a good follow-up to the last one too.

Machine Head - Bloodstone and Diamonds.

There's something about the production that doesn't click with me, but I can't put my finger on it. It seems soulless.

Metallica - Creeping Death

One of their best songs for sure. It's been a while since I listened to Ride the Lightning but it's still killer. Yeah, "Trapped Under Ice" and "Escape" are weak but everything else kicks so much ass. :headbang:

I actually really like both of those tracks. "Escape" in particular takes a lot of shit, but I think it's a better song than what the reputation it has acquired might suggest.

I don't think there are any bad tracks on RTL. People citing "Escape" as one I never understand - perfectly good tune.

Celtic Legacy - Timeless

These guys should be huge - but alas good music is so often underground...

I was impressed the first time I saw them live but not anymore. Don't know, they lost something?

Can You Loan Me a Raven? from (2014) Falls of Rauros & Panopticon Split.
I didn't like the first part of the split (Falls of Rauros) but Panopticon is, as always, nice.
Some Burzumesque arpeggios in this song?

Samael - The Black Face

Took a while for me to get around to checking out the debut. Quality-wise it clearly plays in the same league as the two follow-ups, while being even more vicious and feral, so basically: .

Falls of Rauros - Ancestors of Smoke

Hmm.. Interesting. I have to say that the folksy country interludes actually fit really well with the whole cascadian, melodic black metal stuff. The album, unfortunately is neither more the sum of it's parts, or brilliant in any way, simply an enjoyable listen and a bit of an oddity. I'm assuming they got the genre mash up idea from Panopticon's flirtations with blue grass. I think the whole despondent country thing fits better than blue grass in this frame work, but Falls of Rauros just failed in writing anything that was particularly engaging, past the superficial "huh?" factor. At least Roads to North was packing some solid riffs and emotional weight.

Deadboy and the Elephantmen - If This is Hell, I'm Lucky.

Re-listening to this after a long time is like coming home. It's a straight up spiritual experience for me. Experiencing some of these songs on acid was the most euphoric moment of my life.

The ending crescendo that finishes this song is just pure musical bliss.
