It's strange that Amazon does this, on Trade Me http://www.trademe.co.nz/ if something sells [offsite] but it's still listed they charge you to withdraw it or suspend your account, so people will leave the thing listed but inflate the price to 'put people off'.
Maybe this is something similar?

I paid $53 for a CD of Gorguts - Obscura. I used to have two copies but they are (probably) lost somewhere in California. I didn't realize it was out of print till I was trying to buy a new copy at which point I saw it going for $70-80+ so I consider the $53 I paid a steal (and that's for a "used" copy!)

TBH If it's an album I love I'm willing to shell out a lot. Music is the only thing I spent lots of $$ on so I can usually afford it. (CDs, headphones, headphone amps etc.)

Even though Obscura was reissued this year it still sells for about that, the album has pedigree.

No idea why, since I could get one for about $20 on Discogs.

Amazon usually is a No-Go for used music, nowhere else sellers call such stupid prices

Really? I get loads of used stuff from amazon and it's usually for a good price and you don't get fucked on shipping like people on discogs sometimes will.

I was lucky enough to find an original Olympic (non-promo) Obscura about a month ago at a local shop, for $16 US (after a $3 off coupon). It has a tiny little punch hole in the corner of the inlay card, but other than that it doesn't look like its been played much.

But yeah, an awesome record for sure.

I'm just hoping I can find their first two at a nice deal someday as well. :)

I lucked out with all the Gorguts albums (well, the first four)... got 'em all about 10 years ago (give or take), all first presses and between 20 to 30 NZD (Obscura was the only brand new, store-bought one.. and I got From Wisdom to Hate from a trade). Funnily enough I'd put off buying Erosion of Sanity many a time - literally, the first time I could have bought it was 1993, but at the time the band name made me think they were some shitty grindcore band - then when I finally did, it was the Metal Mind digipak. I didn't like how it sounded so I checked out Trademe and scored an original for less than I paid for the reissue

Yeah it was obnoxiously loud and brickwalled. All those Metal Mind reissues were smashed to the fuckhouse, but of course the mid-2000s was the height of the loudness war. I remember when Immolation - Unholy Cult came out, that was the first CD that made me think "wtf this is just too damn loud".

Still on discogs, there's a copy of colombian death/black metal band Nebiros "guerreros de lucifer" sold for € 777,77 !!!!!!!

It's incredible to me, this one is a pretty average album with anything that justifies such an insane price.

Is it really that rare? I've seen stuff from them here - as well other bands like Ekron Cult - sold at normal prices. Also ,they fucking suck.

Legend has it that it was pressed on 300 copies but some of them got lost, so maybe it's rare but I wonder who can be so senseless to invest so many money in an obscure middle 90s colombian black metal band.

It's just for the sake of saying "hey, i own it", I suppose.
Yet in its selling history it's said that the last time it has been sold it was for 560 €, enormous as well. So, it seems that tere's somebody on this planet willing to pay half a salary to pick up one...

But I remember I bought it for some 5 euros in a vinyl fair in Milano almost twenty years ago and when I went home and played it I didn't cringe before a masterpiece... honestly I think I didn't even get to the end of side A....

Someone trying to sell it for 121+Eur on discogs, but no deal is done yet, probably price is too high.

Still it is quite sought after, because 7 have and 38 want it.

I may be partially to blame for that. Last three months I've been going through Discogs and snatching any rare/OOP stuff I thought was priced too low, regardless of how many I already own. My intention isn't to resell them, I'm a hoarder :(

Discogs has become in such a place. Too many information, too many connoisseurs that inflate the prizes of rare/uncommon stuff for its supposed ultrarare/kvlt value. I mean, some obscure 80-90 albums go insanely expensive only for it's lack of availability (when the quality of the stuff could be questionable at best).

The most despicable thing to me is the bootleg thing. There are way too many bootlegs at sale at ridiculous prizes and people still buy that crap for the sake of 'completing' a band's discography, even if such release is not a part of the band's work. Ok, some bootlegs contain real valuable content, but most of them are demos or rehearsals already available.

BTW, how much should I pay for both Ulver's Bergtatt and Kveldssanger first presses?

So I just picked up this for a measly $2 http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Ma ... tten/61536

It doesn't actually sound that great, but the main reason I grabbed it was the fact that according to the page linked, it was limited to 36 copies. Does this make it worth anything? Obviously something is only worth what someone is willing to pay, or is it actually likely to be as rare as it says?

Yeah, and? loads of us do that, don't worry about it.
I got a Powersurge CD a while ago because it looked old and rare, turns out it's not but the music is fully wicked so - score :nods:

In case you don't want it anymore, get in touch. I'm always curious about such obscure things. As goes for the 36 copies...Well, it sound strange any pressing plant would settle for only printing so few. Imagine the cost for only making 36 copies. At least in my country - during that era - you'd have to order 500 copies minimum. Or maybe 300, but still had to pay for 500.

Yeah, I'm skeptical. Though for label it does say "independent", I wont be surprised if it is basically just burnt CDRs with colour photo copied covers. But then if it actually is that limited, it begs the question why anyone would go to the expense and effort to record the thing in the first place for such limited distribution.

Anyway, I guess I'll be able to see it when it turns up next week.

Then I may try to explain: it's the music market of today. Fewer and fewer people are purchasing records, so there's no need to print thousands for each title. BUT, there's still someone buying records. Yesterday, today and in the future there'll aways be someone who needs the concrete vinyl or tape or cd to listen to it and appreciate. You may take me as an example, I don't listen to music I don't own the media support of. If the record I listen is not on my collection shelf, then to me it's like it had never been released. But I'm not the only one.

More people like me exist, and more will exist in the future. So, an extra-limited release may gain your band popularity somewhere in time. Of course if your music sucks this may never happen, but if you're convinced on what you're doing, it's better to have a limited solid piece circling around the world that will always exist and be carefully kept rather than a bunch of mp3 files only that can be lost with a "delete" button or a computer system crash and burn.

Rarities are not for everybody. But someone that will appreciate'em always lives. Worls is a better place to dwell if they'll keep on existing.

I bought doubles of Intestine Baalism's last two albums so I could have copies to listen to and copies that could be rare. Does that make sense?
I debated buying Gorguts' "Obscura" when it was re released and limited to like 100 copies or something because it might be rare too, but decided not to because in the end I just don't like them, so if it never took off I couldn't just listen to it if I wanted to.

Also don't you ever kick yourself in the ass for not having stuff in mint condition that today is like $500 (retro games for example)? For like $35 it's not always a bad investment.
