The new Blaze of Perdition is really good. I only own 'Towards the blaze of perdition' and haven't listened to it for a long time - but I remember liking it - so I can't compare 'Upharsin' with the rest of their discography, but it is definitely a great listen:

Antichrist Siege Machine’s Vengeance of Eternal Fire deserves to be heard, that and Heresiarch’s latest may be top ten this year. Two extremely brutal yet memorable offerings.

Yep, totally agree. Both are killer war metal records that are among my favorite albums from this year.

Progressive sludge/post-metal outfit Dvne has just released (Aprilt 19th) their third LP, Voidkind. As the band's name suggests, it's lyrical themes are heavily inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune.

From a sonic standpoint, the band's main influence seems to be Mastodon, with the multiple vocalists juggling with harsh and clean vocals, longer progressive tracks with softer and heavier sections, high focus on contrasts, etc. The band also shares elements with Baroness, Kylesa and other prog sludge/post-metal acts.

It's pretty damn solid, and a good contender for my top 10 AOTY so far.

I like it, it's very 2010's. It reminds me a lot of bands like Baroness, Mastodon and Kylesa too. It goes to the top ten list.

Mallephyr deliver a great black/death album. Has some similarities to Blasphemer-era Mayhem, in fact, the riffs here and there sound very much like him. Yes, I pretty much agree on the Blasphemer-era Mayhem similarities, I got the same feeling. First listen left me quite indifferent, but with each listen the album grows on me. It's not that long, but it's so intense and full of detail that it's impossible to consume in a few listens. It's a great example of an album that gets better the more time you give it. Probably one of the gems of this year.

Their previous album, Etemen Ænka made my top-10 list for the year it came out in. I have high hopes for this one.

I'm still getting myself caught up on the March/early-April releases I missed, this is what I've enjoyed so far.

-Convulsing (AUS) - perdurance (indie, progressive/dissodeath, 8-9)
03-08:
-Skeletal Remains (USA) - Fragments of the Ageless (Century Media, death, 9-10)
-Judas Priest (GBR) - Invincible Shield (Sony Music, heavy, 8-9)
03-15:
-Necrophobic (SWE) - In the Twilight Grey (Century Media, melodic death, 8-9)
03-22:
-Brodequin (USA) - Harbringer of Woe (SoMUA, brutal death, 8-9)
-Apparition (USA) - Disgraced Emanations from a Tranquil State (Profound Lore, death, 8-9)
03-29:
-Vorga (GER) - Beyond the Palest Star (Transcending Obscurity, black, 9)
04-04:
-Kvadrat (GRE) - The Horrible Dissonance of Oblivion (Nuclear Winter, blackened/dissodeath, 8)
04-05:

04-12:

Still need to listen to Bongripper, Replicant, Critical Defiance and Nuclear Tomb

And the racing fan in me can't make this post without giving a special shoutout to I Am the Intimidator! Great stuff.

This Morgul Blade album is pretty amazing, mix between traditional heavy metal and black metal. It sounds a little bit like Carcass in their more death n roll phase too, this a very creative and solid band.

Yeah, well, not gonna lie, it's fairly similar to Mānbryne, given it's almost the same band. If you liked Mānbryne's previous efforts, you'll enjoy this. Oh, and it's way better then The Harrowing of Hearts; not only much more vicious and agressive, the songs are just overall better crafted in my opinion.

The Lumberjack Feedback - The Stronghold

French band playing instrumental post metal, doom with some sludge thrown in for good measure.
I mean, it’s my cup of tea, so I quite like it. And then there’s the fact that they have two drummers.

Skraeckoedlan - Vermillion Sky

Image

The Swedish stoner metal scene is disproportionately large and vibrant (although that could be said for our country’s complete musical output).
Skraeckoedlan has always been a favorite of mine, and this is their first output in five years. I’d say that my initial reaction was “wtf, disappointed?” – but it has grown on me.
This is without doubt one of the best stoner metal albums of 2024.

No trap beats, no cartel torture/murder samples, no programmed gravity blasting, no melodic development, just straight for the throat, ultra-dumb, Mortician-styled death metal.*

*Aside from the utterly bizarre Moby cover, which may be the most bizarre thing out of the many bizarre things this band has done.

I didn't get as much listening done as hoped in April, so as such I don't have my usual big mass of good albums, with only two of my targets crossing that 7/10 horizon for me.

Coffins - Sinister Oath
While I only have two things to list, I do have a new current AOTY. This is just meaty filthy riffs end on end and it rules. So nasty, so groovy, oooouggghhh.

Critical Defiance - The Search Won't Fall
Chiilean thrash band doing Chilean thrash things. Shocking. This one has a techy lean to it which elevated it over a lot of the nations consistently high quality content for me.

Listening through now, this is fucking great. This is how I like my death metal - dirty and nasty.

Havent even gotten to the Moby cover yet but that Moby album is close to being a top 10 album of all time for me so looking forward to it.

The Desolus debut is a heater. Solidly in the Kreator/Morbid Saint/Incubus/Sadus realm of hummingbird energy thrash, with just a hint of Norwegian black/thrash with all the wild falsettos. Thrash is in one of the best places it's ever been, quality-wise, and this is no exception.

I was just going to mention the new Horn. I've only listened to it once all the way through so I can't yet say if I prefer it to 'Verzet', one of my AOTYs for 2022, but my initial impression is that it is yet another fantastic release by this project with a flawless discography.
Another of my favourite German bands, Dauthuz, put out another great album of melodic, mining-obsessed BM. 'Uranium' follows the winning streak of another band which can apparently do no wrong:

i guess technically a horna side project but doesn’t seem particularly finnish to me. somewhere between mgla, craft and the occasional paracletusism. really fun stuff.

bythos chronic gates unveiled is another horna-related band. in the terratur possessions tradition, it’s steeped in bm traditionalism while still being its own thing. largely midpaced, it sounds sorta behexen-y (although that’s prob a little too obvious a comparison given the people involved); sometimes it feels like reinkaos-but-good.

exhumation master’s personae is a vicious slab of dm. not a lot to say about this one. i’m not super big on the drum sound but it’s got savage ass riffs which is most important.

Waves Idle Symmetry's Ametron was a surprisingly cool proggy melodic black metal album in about the vein of modern day Enslaved, except with more overstated folky melodies that are both large and in charge, and also exquisitely detailed in the riffs' overall ebb and flow.
