Pretty cool heavy technical thrash group, with some unique symphonic/classical elements thrown in sporadically. Their first album, Extraction From Mortality is more or less a straight up thrash ripper, pretty solid but perhaps lacking originality (besides the badass symphonic intro to the title track). Sanity Obscure and Dimensions are much more technical/progressive, but still keep the evil overtone and raspy vocals that a lot of prog acts abandon. I certainly wouldn't overlook these guys just because they are 'christian metal'.

If you like Coroner, Hexenhaus or Obliveon you will probably enjoy something from these guys.

Relapse doesn't tend to change layouts on reissues, they just repress them. I've had two copies of Amongst the Catacombs - one firstpress, then a reissue when I lost the original - and you'd never know the difference without looking at the disc matrix.

I remember adding and updating my Nile CDs on Discogs was a total pain in the arse, similar to Mortician: repress of a repress of a repress

A lot of releases on this scale are pressed at multiple facilities when they need a lot of copies. So even the first pressing can be impossible to identify because there's 3 or 4 different versions released simultaneously but pressed in different places, or even on different machines at the same facility.

Hmmm.. fair point. I'm quite sure mine are both original presses as I purchased them right when they came out. I am actually pretty happy they do it that way.

Yeah it's certainly preferable to changing the cover art, or repackaging in some crappy cardboard case, or adding badly recorded live and/or demo tracks as a "bonus"..

Post subject:  Re: Your Latest Album Purchase(s)

I think it's great if they leave the release as much as the original as possible. But they should put a little info wether it's a re-release or not on it. A year of release is enough.

BTW, maybe this is some useful info I forgot to tell: mine was still wrapped in foil. The foil looked old, but it had one of those pain-in-the-ass white stickers on top of the jewelcase which has the barcode and labelcode on it. Did they already use that in 2000? I know they recently switched to paper 'cards' on top of the jewelcases.

Probably is an older one then, those cardboard ones have been around for a while. I definitely like those better, it's a shame more labels don't do it. Seems to only be an American thing, all the CDs I get from Europe are generally just sealed in shrinkwrap.

Actually they do. Newer represses on Relapse have a date stamped on the matrix area, which is the pressing date. I can see that on my Neurosis discs I bought on their booth at Hellfest last year. ;)

No, I don't mean a slipcase. Just a little piece of cardboard within the shrinkwrap. This sticker also came within the shrinkwrap.

Here you can see both. The yellow ones are just a piece of paper folded around the top of the jewelcase within a shrink wrap. On the inside is some promotion of other albums they have released.
And the cd at the top left corner has one of those white stickers if you look closely. Also within a shrink wrap.

Oh, didn't know that. My matrix code is: DADR 07WV7<7232>6448. Maybe 2007?

Edit: Oh no, I see what you mean with my exhumed - gore metal redux cd. It has an exact date and even time on it. Even the new, rerecorded one. So not only re-releases/presses.

Post subject:  Re: Your Latest Album Purchase(s)

Yeah I know what you meant. The sticky ones are called a "dog bone" and have been standard on US-pressed CDs since, well, as long ago as I can remember. Relapse's little promo-cardboard things make much more sense. But I guess the point of the dog-bone sticker is the it's impossible to remove and replace, so you're pretty much guaranteed that no one's fucked with your disc.

Oh yeah, i'm pretty sure most Relapse discs were pressed at Disc Mfg at the time those Nile albums were first released. The DADR ones are mid 2000s, from around when Annihilation of the Wicked came out. Both my Amongst.. and Black Seeds.. CDs are the same matrix type as my In Their Darkened Shrines disc. They seemed to have a habit of repressing all the older Nile albums every time they released a new one

Yeah, that's it. Some labels do it as well, I can think of Xtreem Music for instance. It's actually something all labels could start doing to end the endless "first press debate".

I honestly don't get the hype over first presses of albums that have just been re-pressed rather than reissued. If nothing's changed other than the matrix on the CD, who gives a flying fuck really?

Same, unless it's been badly manufactured or surreptitiously altered I couldn't give a crap.

On topic finally picked up a copy of Disentomb - Misery. I've found myself a bit numbed to a lot of the more technical bdm releases of late but this album is just immense.

I was on a flea market and found some old school skatepunk and some other random stuff. Pretty neat stuff, especially Venerea. Havn't seen a copy of Shake Your Booty for a long time.

Image
The Offspring - Smash (first press, the only album from them that I like)
3 Doors Down - Seventeen Days (will probably give it to my brother)
No Fun At All - No Straight Angles (first press, this one is a classic)
Venerea - Shake Your Booty (first press, the nostalgia is strong in this one)
Thomas Rusiak - Magic Villa (this one hasn't aged well, haha)

And here's some metal:
Image
Anti-Mortem - New Southern (limited digipak, got it for free, have only listened to a couple of tracks)
Annihilator - Feast (limited edition, was dirt cheap, it's nothing spectacular but "Deadlock" is great and the packaging is awesome)
Deceiver - Deceiver (pretty awesome heavy/thrash from Sweden)
Vektor - Black Future (Heavy Artillery press, this album slays, finally I have both Vektor cd:s)
