Blaze Bayley - Tears in Rain

This guy so clearly fuckin LOVES what he does, and it really makes a big difference in what would either way be good, strong material... here it really elevates it... I love the strange, involved melodic choices from the Absolva guys, and the way these songs never do what you think they will. It's really strong even when some of them prolong things a little. Even those moments grow on you.

My Dying Bride - The Apocalyptist

Well... I certainly think I know what my favorite song on this new MDB album is. Damn, that is goooooooddddd.

"Bloodthirst" is definitely my favorite Corpsegrinder-era album (it honestly might be my favorite CC album overall). Every last song is a total fucking banger.

Morgul Blade – Fell Sorcery Abounds

Blackened heavy metal with a Nutsghoul on lead vox and choral chanting performed by Hobbits, Dwarves or similar furry beings. Good if you want to attune yourself to your next LARP adventure in the woods behind the house.

Their second album is out on Friday.

Scorpions - Drifting Sun

Woke up to this song last night. The riff is good, Ulrich's singing is not that bad, the ending is a guitar orgasm. It's not in the "strange shit" territory like lot of his songs are, but not that far either. Scorpions did put something in their music that very few bands do.

Paramaecium - Exhumed of the Earth

Reminds me of early Paradise Lost but more accessible.

I wouldn't call an album with three 10 minute tracks accessible. :p

r.

Even with 10 minute songs, compared to Paradise Lost it's like listening to Louie Louie.

Antestor - Omen

Unblack/death with some clean vocals. It's competitive with The Forsaken album. I think I like it better.

This is a good description of that song and of the uniqueness of their 70s material.

The Fall of Every Season - Amends

I got turned onto this by Metalcrypt... just a really sweeping, arresting work of doom that's not like much else. Kinda While Heaven Wept-ish, but more modern, less classic style. Lots of big layered songs, big melodies over other stuff going on underneath. Really sharp guitars and some well done clean vocals. Complex, involving; I really dig it.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans

OK, I think I do get it after all. They have a good sense of craft. Good, massive heavy fucking riffs help - this one has some really arresting songwriting.

"Swans" is more of a work of art than it is an "album". And, to my ears, it's as much prog metal as it is doom metal.

The (un)holy trio of "The Snow In My Hand" / "The Crown of Sympathy" / "Turn Loose the Swans" is one of most musically adventurous & emotionally draining set of songs ever recorded, IMO. Oh, the closing piece, "Black God", may be their darkest piece of music. Just sublime.

You can definitely hear a lot of Celtic Frost in this - a really great sense of pacing and these gigantic lumbering riffs... and yes, on "The Crown of Sympathy" now, really impressive. There is a really exquisite sense of melody to all this.

My Dying Bride - A Mortal Binding

Back to back... yeah, after sampling some other stuff, this new one with the heavy as fuck guitar attack really is pretty striking.

After Dopethrone, Dozethrone, Goat Bong, Weedeater, Goat Throne and Dopesmoker now there is:

Goatsmoker – E.O.T.A

Repetitive stoner doom with yelly-screamy vocals that makes waiting for the new Throneeater and Eatsmoker releases more bearable.

The Vision Bleak - Weird Tales

Once you adapt to the “one track structure” of the album, this is a real treat and it gets better each time I listen to it.

One of my favorites off this raging slab of Slayer. Bostaph is killing it and some excellent riffing.

Man - really stoked to see where they go for the next album. This is top fucking quality. Even down to the lyrics and image, a really fully-formed, mature and interesting thing.

My Dying Bride - The Apocalyptist

This one's been getting a lot of repeats from me. I'm completely entranced by its epic swoops with these rollicking riffs over Aaron Stainthorpe's purposeful narration.

Ponte del Diavolo - Fire Blades from the Tomb

Really interesting take on doom - a stripped down, dirty guitar tone like something from the very early 80s or so, and songwriting that's minimalist in the way that it could be used as a soundtrack for an occult horror movie... lots of repetition, a simplicity you kind of have to give yourself over to. Not sure every tune is the same quality but it's a really interesting work.

How Aaron manages to retain his nasty growl is a mystery to me, but I'm glad that he still sounds this good. Love the sinister riffs, too.

What a massive thing. Playing this after some Ensiferum is like looking at a deftly-painted masterpiece of art after looking at a child's squiggly-line drawing.

Indeed. I've been listening to most of their catalogue the past few weeks and probably appreciate "Feel the Misery" more now than I ever have.
Again, there are no bad MDB albums, IMO.

Windir - Arntor

It blows away 99% of black metal albums with folk, pagan and viking elements. Incredibly well written, amazingly unique. Valfar was truly one of a kind

Good stuff. Think of Anathema's old heavy riff work mixed with the melodic sensibly of early October Tide.

Absolutely crushing death/doom. Newer single came out today and it is equally heavy. Looking forward to when this album drops May 17th.

One of my favorite speed metal albums, and a pre-cursor for the thrash metal to come with Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth.

Moonlight Sorcery - Piercing Through the Frozen Eternity

What an EP to start your career! As a whole I think the actual début from a year later is better, but this little disc already has a lot to offer. The black metal with shredding works so much better than you woumd expect. For Thy Light Is Ice will be my go to track to introduce people to the band.

Solstice - New Dark Age
Twisted Tower Dire - The Isle of Hydra
Slough Feg - Atavism

Atavism isn't their best, but the first few songs are really fucking good... they just keep killing. A lot of the back half or so feels disjointed, not as unified as their best work, but there are moments of glory... but fuck, "Hiberno Latin Invasion" has to be up there with their best. A mammoth flail of a riff.

More listens...

Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern Sounds in Country Music - A whole lot of Waylon in this excellent album.

Darkthrone - Eternal Hails - I like each album on either side better, but this is a nice doomy slab.

Queensryche - Condition Human - A very nice listen. A lot of Tate in the vocals and good songwriting.

Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes - Early live classic.

Can't get enough of the crazy songwriting they do on this. The pacing, the strange progressive ideas they'll throw in in the midst of the giant song structures, the big riffs and vocal moments. This and the newest album have really made me understand them I think.

Turn Loose The Swans amazes me still. The way those riffs manage to sound shocking, rousing and dangerous AND also melancholic, supremely heavy and damning is genius. The title track collects everything and spews it over the world. A feast of esotericisms and woes, for sure!

...and of course I'm listening to A Mortal Binding.

"A Starving Heart" is a gentler one but couched in the middle of dark epics "The Apocalyptist" and "Crushed Embers", it is still gloomy by association. Lena Abé's bass grounds this in the mounds of burial earth. Ugh.
