Moore and Myung are (or were) the best lyricists. Portnoy and Petrucci are too damn cheesy in that department.
A five songs suite about rehabilitation? A 20 minutes epic about a weird-looking tuscan? Please.

It might be a stage name, but LaRoque is a real French surname. So I don't know how he pronounces it, but the name LaRoque is pronounced the way I said in my previous post.

I personally think Kevin Moore’s approach to keyboards worked as a more subtle counterpoint to most of Dream Theater’s other musicians having a flashier attitude. He was also the group’s greatest lyricist whose more cynical, personal touch is another great contrast to how overwrought or saccharine the other guys tend to be lyrically, especially Petrucci. That and I think somebody who was on DT’e first three albums is just gonna have more reverence by default.

I don’t think Rudess is awful for the band and you can tell that they considered having him on to be a major win but with how he joins them in those flashier methods, it just threw the last bit of subtlety they had right out the window.

I think this about sums it all. His approach (his style) to keyboards is definitely more subtle, and also something easily recognizable, once you start exploring his other works outside of Dream Theater. I like Rudess as well, but yeah, he's also very flashy, and that's why he fits so well in stuff like Liquid Tension Experiment, while Moore would feel very out of place in such a context. His lyrics are great as well!

The day I finally stopped trying to get into Dream Theater and just accepted that they weren't for me was the day they released a 16 minute song about a minor car crash that didn't kill anybody.

Yeah, it's 'A Nightmare to Remember'. Petrucci did the lyrics for it.

BY THE GRACE OF GOD ABOVE
EVERYONE SURVIVED
ROOOOAAARRRRR

I still enjoy that album quite a bit but totally understand those lyrics being a dealbreaker. Worlds away from something like Space Dye Vest.

Both this and The Count of Tuscany are among the worst lyrical offenders in their discography.

Typically silly DT lyrics, but, my god, that song absolutely slays!

I can't think of any right now, but I generally like instrumental when they actually have a purpose, so yay, I guess.

Instrumental songs that aren't interludes are almost always a "yay" for me, title track or not.

Two of the albums I’ve recorded have instrumental title tracks so I think I’m legally required to say yay. I think it works in an “encapsulate the overall vibe” sorta way.

Not a random question but a random thought - Martin Christian is Paragon's alpha and omega - guitarist, founder and main songwriter. He did not have a hand in only one album of their extensive discography - Force of Destruction. It is also their best album by a landslide, which is both curious and ironic regarding his position and status in the band.

Recently got into the black metal band Abigor, and while Verwustung's MA page here (their 1st studio album) has 9 tracks listed, the album on Spotify has 17 tracks (the extra tracks are a Disc 2). Is this another version of the album, like a special edition?

I guess if you had to fit it under a category, that Dynasty Warriors track would be some combination of heavy and folk metal.

It is a compilation, disc one is Verwüstung and disc two is his fourth album Opus IV.

Disbanded/on hiatus due to personal issues between the members.

When the album first came out there was an incredible interview with the artist who built the structure photographed on Inter Arma's Sky Burial artwork. For some reason I cannot find this anywhere. Does anyone remember the artist and what blog that was posted on?

Didn't one of the guys also have a big mental breakdown or something, and ended up having to go on an extended leave for therapy and whatnot? Was that David?

Because David also talked about creating a new project called Weather Systems and described it as the continuation of the band or something. So yeah, there are still issues between the musicians in Anathema. It's a prolonged hiatus that very much rhymes with disbanded, in my opinion as well.

I recommend you check Discogs.com. There you can find very detailed information about albums' editions and whatnot

Your top 7 Black Metal hymns?

Off of the top of my head:

1. Immortal - Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)
2. Kvist - Vettenetter
3. Mayhem - De Mysteriis dom Sathanas
4. Burzum - Jesus' Tod
5. Satyricon - Mother North
6. Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay (Not technically BM, I know)
7. Immortal - Years of Silent Sorrow

I know I'm probably missing a lot of classics, but these are the bands and albums I like and know so what can you do.

A song that is inspiring, solemn and (arguably) considered a classic among the community.

Anyone heard anything about Vintersorg lately? The latest album was released in 2017, it would be cool if he drops a new one in 2024...

The band signed to Hammerheart Records back in October, they're working on completing the four album elemental concept series they started with Jordpuls with the water album:

Quote:
“We are very inspired about this new step in the Vintersorg story, where we have started a new partnership with Hammerheart Records. We are looking forward to this and are preparing the fourth album of the Element cycle, the “Water-album” as our first mantel piece in the Hammerheart Record’s vast musical gallery, epic times ahead.”

He also has a new project in the works called Dimibild, which is apparently some sort of acoustic version of Vintersorg (as he describes it):

Quote:
“The Dimbild project took form 2022 when Vintersorg came to the conclusion to do something serious of fragments and ideas that he had gather for many years. Theese were of an semi-accoustic flavour and rooted in the Scandinavian folk music traditions, but also with an bombastic approach at times. In 2022 songs were compiled and also written. The Vintersorg trademark vocals are written all over this musical art.

It’s has been a nice journey to make the Dimbild songs come to life. I feel that I’ve found the best suitable home for this at Hammerheart Records. The songs are something that I feel is a new fresh breeze in the folk genre and also in my own way of writing music.”

Try this one, the first seconds of that album sound like the intro of a Monkey Island game.

I agree with SanPeron about checking out ...Magni blandinn ok megintíri..., but if you like things a little more folk-y and polished maybe try Heralding: The Fireblade

The song "Heathenish Foray" can be found on both albums so you can hear the difference

Metallica's MA page is completely unusable due to zillion live albums listed. I know all of those are official releases via Metallica Fan club or something, but jeeez, is it really necessary to list them all?!

Anyone been to Rockstadt, OEF, Graspop or Rock Imperium festivals before?

Looking at going to one of them in 2024 and just want some ideas of the size, food/drink prices, ease of getting to them, general vibes etc

Yet another occurance of big bands not understanding that nobody wants to hear every single note they ever played. Why are you recording and releasing every single one of the shows you're playing?
