They're not bad, but compared to the other stuff on the album? They really pale in comparison, with less powerful vocal performances and riffs/song structures that just kind of play it safe.

I actually think Marriage 2 is better than Marriage 1. It is a much more fuller album where the first seemed to be skimping. "Unholy Water" is hardly the best song on the album but it hangs in there well and Victory Is Mine is fucking awesome.

Now "Self Crucifixion" on the other hand... :(

Fucking rules, yes. Come on man, that song is amazing just because of the solo it has in it. I never liked ''I Wake up Screaming''. Some lame riffing on that one. I agreed that ''Unholy Water'' and ''Victory is Mine'' are both solid. The latter especially.

Conception has ''Guilt'' which doesn't do much for me. There's just no energy in it as opposite to the other atmospheric tracks on that album.

Also, Fates Warning's ''Orphan Gypsy'' never clicked with me. A bunch of cool riffs appear here and there but the song just misses something.

"I Wake Up Screaming" rules! :-P
That righteous enunciation by Dave on; "do you think you want to fuck with me!" GUILTY PLEASURE!

I kind of see what you mean about "Orphan Gypsy" though. I particularly love Arch's vocal harmonies on that one but when you compare it to the other material on the album like "The Apparition" or "Traveler In Time", it loses.

awwww come on you guys! "Orphan Gypsy" is incredibly poignant and moving. Every song on The Spectre Within stands out. The material that doesn't do a lot for me was on their last two records.

Metallica gargle balls, vengefulgoat, get over it.

To contribute, and I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned before as it tends to be one of the first, Iron Maiden's Invaders, that retarded pentatonic chorus is just laughable and the rest of the song certainly does nothing to redeem it.

Judas Priest's "Invader" on the other hand...genius!

Dream Theater has a lot of inconsequential moments. "Take Away My Pain" (songs with that title tend to suck, check out the one by Jag Panzer as well for full proof) and the spectacularly awful "You Not Me" from "Falling Into Infinity" should have ended up on the cutting floor.
The whole first disc of Six Degrees... also tends to lag and nag. Especially Petrucci's awful lyrics and guitar feedback shit on "Misunderstood" and the utterly pointless "The Great Debate".

Calling "The Great Debate" pointless is really dumb! :annoyed:
Have you even viewed the lyrics and tried to grasp the legitimate concerns that the band was trying to put across?

Quote:
What if someone said
Promise lies ahead
Hopes are high in certain scientific circles
Life won't have to end
You could walk again

What if someone said
Problems lie ahead
They've uncovered something highly controversial
The right to life is strong
Can't you see it's wrong

Human kind has reached a turning point
Poised for conflict at ground zero
Ready for a war
Do we look to our unearthly guide
Or to white coat heroes
Searching for a cure

Turn to the light
Don't be frightened of the shadows it creates
Turn to the light
Turning away would be a terrible mistake

Anarchistic moral vision
Industries of death
Facing violent opposition
Unmolested breathe

Ethic inquisitions breed
Antagonistic views
Right wing sound bite premonitions
In a labyrinth of rules

Are you justified
Are you justified
Are you justified
Justified in taking
Life to save life
Life to save life
Taking life to save life

This embryonic clay
Wrapped in fierce debate
Would be thrown away
Or otherwise discarded

Some of us believe
It may hold the key
To treatment of disease
And secrets highly guarded

Are you justified
Are you justified
Are you justified
Justified in taking
Life to save life
Life to save life
Life to save life

Human kind has reached a turning point
Poised for conflict at ground zero
Ready for a war
Do we look to our unearthly guide
Or to white coat heroes

Turn to the light
Don't be frightened of the shadows it creates
Turn to the light
Turning away would be a terrible mistake

We're reaching
But have we gone too far

Harvesting existence
Only to destroy
Carelessly together
We are sliding

Someone else's future
Four days frozen still
Someone else's fate
We are deciding

Miracle potential
Sanctity of life
Faced against each other
We're divided

Should we push the boundaries
Or should we condemn
Moral guilt and science
Have collided

Turn to the light
We defy our own mortality these days
Turn to the light
Pay attention to the questions we have raised

I don't mean to insult or offend but man, those lyrics are atrocious and LaBrie's delivery is so cringeworthy, I wanted to reach through the speakers when I first heard that song and pull him out and shake him really heard. The playing is also rather dull and meandering. Of course Dream Theater fans consider most of their material, even the obviously sub par material as better than any band playing straightforward metal but that song chews.
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence maintains a rather preachy tone on the entire record that I don't much appreciate. When I first saw the track listing, I thought the song was based upon the Harlow Shapley and Heber Curtis debate which seems a rather odd but Prog rock thing to sing about and one I'd have rather preferred than that anti-stem cell research speech.

That song is insightful and captures well the issue in a non-partisan fashion. More attention ought to be paid to Petrucci's lyrics...he really is one of the finer writers out there today. I could say as good as Roger Waters. But Waters became trite towards the end of Floyd.

Read the lyrics of The Count of Tuscany, he has alright lyrics and very awful ones.

I'd say that "I'll Be There" by Megadeth sounds quite unremarkable even though the lyrics are profound. Yeah, it might be on Megadeth's worst album, but the shimmery (for want of a better word) feel of it doesn't really do it any favours either because when I listen to it I get the feeling that it was just really heavily toned down from what it could have been. While I do know a few more examples, "I'll Be There's" just the one that happens to spring to mind

I think Burzum - Gullaldr is completely unnecessary. Or do a metal album or do a Norwegian folk album, but do not mix, because the result can be boring for the most orthodox fans.

The Great Debate is awful. Something close to a third of it is just political soundbites with instrumental backing, and I'd rather they pick a specific view and address it in the most emotional and irrational way possible than simply state that there are, indeed, two sides to the highly-pressing debate of human cloning. Oh wait, it was completely topical and no one even cares anymore. Pussyfooting at its worst, and probably my least favorite Dream Theater song.

Nah, Marriage I is all killer. Nary a bad track on it - every song just lays waste. Marriage II is great, but the first one is their masterwork. It's not as epic or magisterial as the ones that followed, but the songs are simply the best they ever did, with killer riffs and triumphant vocals. The basics of a great sound.
