Sublustris originated from the band Canister, which was founded in November 1995 by Ton de Haan (drums), Martijn Weeda (bass), Sebastiaan den Oudsten (guitar), and Niels Jansen (guitar). The departure of Ton de Haan in August of 1996 resulted in a name change to Sublustris (Latin for "twilight"). Sebastiaan den Oudsten and Ton de Haan were at no time part of the Sublustris line-up.
