Quartz initially performed in the midlands cabaret clubs as Bandy Legs, and signed to Jet Records in 1976, releasing their first single, "Bet you can't dance", under that name. They switched to Quartz in time for their debut album, produced by Tony Iommi and Chris Tsangarides.

They later signed with MCA Records, but were dropped when the album did not sell as much as the label expected.
