Ocelotl means Jaguar (Panthera onca) or Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) in Nahuatl, an ancient Mexican language still spoken in Mexico and Central America.

Ocelot and Jaguar were sacred animals to indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica, nowadays there are indigenous people who still consider them as sacred animals and protect them from hunters.
