Lizzie Borden (1860-1927) was a Fall River, Massachusetts woman who was tried and acquitted in the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother. The case was a cause célèbre throughout the United States and despite her acquittal, Borden remains a notorious figure in American folklore. No one else was charged, and speculation on the case continues to this day.
