Hess was founded in 1994 by brothers Tom and Scott Hess, and the band used to play live shows in the Chicago area since 1995. In 1996 Scott left the band to finish his college degree and a replacement was found in Chris Dowgun, but from that year to 2001 the band had no bass player and they kept on playing live shows as a three-piece with pre-recorded bass and keyboard parts.
