For Ruin began as a solo project of John Murphy, who recorded the split and the two subsequent demos as such using material written written as early as 1998. In 2005 a full band was formed in order to play live and record the Obsidian EP, and the debut album was recorded as a full band by the second incarnation of the lineup.
