Founded by Juan E. Aristizábal and Andrés Garcia, Ekhymosis began as a thrash metal act strongly influenced by american bands as Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax.

The band turned to a pop/rock sound with the release of "Ciudad Pacifico" until their first split-up in 1999.

The singer Juan later started a solo pop career under the name of Juanes and became a huge commercial success.
