The band is named after a mythical creature called Penanggalan; a vampire type human - demon hybrid that can detach its head from the host's torso to roam the night in search of victims to feed on. This creature is said to have originated from Sabah in a form of self taught black magic which grants its practitioner to possess strength, beauty and wealth.
