88 stands for 'HH', as H is the 8th letter of the alphabet. 'HH' is short for 'Heil Hitler' (or possibly 'Heinrich Himmler', leader of the SS). Also, the band's logo consists of 2 swastikas with certain lines cut out so that the logo resembles both the letters 'SS' and the numbers '88'.
