The album is the result of several recording sessions, including unreleased material from the "Croatoan" sessions. The opening track "Epiphany" dates back to live performances in the late 1990s. This Sheltering Night was completed in 2008, however Starkweather had to terminate their contract with former label Candlelight Records before they could switch to Deathwish and finally release the album.
