Recorded at Nas Nuvens Studio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, 15 - 28 December 1988.
Co-produced by Sepultura.
Mixed at Morrisound Recording (Tampa, Florida).
Mastered at Fullersound (Miami, Florida).

All songs written by Sepultura.
All lyrics written by Max Cavalera and Andreas Kisser except "Stronger Than Hate" by Kelly Shaefer.

"Slaves of Pain" is a cover of a song by Andreas Kisser's former band Pestilence, with different lyrics.

Andreas Kisser also recorded studio bass parts for the album.

A video was made for "Inner Self".

The Japanese edition included a bonus track:
10. Special Message for Japanese Fans

The 1997 remastered version contains three bonus tracks:
10. A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer (Os Mutantes cover) (02:21)
11. Inner Self (Drum Track) (05:10)
12. Mass Hypnosis (Drum Track) (04:22)

Reissued in Germany, 2007 by Roadrunner Records / Cargo Records as a limited edition red vinyl, with the same bonus tracks as the 1997 version.

Roadrunner Records had originally comissioned a different artwork for the album cover, but they ended up giving it to Obituary, for their "Cause of Death" album.
