Oskar Montelius, Rikard Sundén, Daniel Mullback and Daniel Mÿhr all played on this album but had left Sabaton before it was released.

The album is about the Swedish Empire. The well-known Swedish historian Bengt Liljegren helped the band with the lyrics on the theme.

The English version has the Swedish titles translated:
1. Dominium Maris Baltici
2. The Lion from the North
3. Gott mit uns
4. A Lifetime of War
5. 1648
6. The Carolean's Prayer
7. Carolus Rex
8. Killing Ground
9. Poltava
10. Long Live the King
11. Ruina Imperii

The tracklist with all Swedish, German and Latin titles translated reads:
Title: Charles the King
1. Baltic Sea Dominion
2. The Lion from the North
3. God with Us
4. A Lifetime of War
5. 1648
6. The Carolean's Prayer
7. Charles the King
8. Killing Ground
9. Poltava
10. Long Live the King
11. Imperial Downfall

The album will be available in at least four editions:
- one disc with Swedish lyrics (only available in Sweden)
- one disc with English lyrics
- two discs with both editions and different coverart. Disc 1 will be the English version and disc 2 the Swedish version. Disc 1 will also contain the following song:

12. Twilight of the Thunder God (Amon Amarth cover) (03:59)

- limited mailorder edition with two discs as above, book and three bonus songs:

12. Twilight of the Thunder God (Amon Amarth cover) (03:59)
13. In the Army Now (Status Quo cover) (03:58)
14. Feuer frei! (Rammstein cover) (03:12)

The album reached platinum sales in Sweden, making Sabaton the first Swedish heavy metal band ever to do so.

Recorded and mixed at Abyss Studio.
Additional recording in Black Lounge Studios.

Brazilian Edition has "Twilight of the Thundergod" (Amon Amarth cover) as bonus track and comes with the digipack artwork instead of the original.
