This live album was recorded in Birmingham, New Orleans, Phoenix, and San Diego during the 1988 Hold Your Fire tour as well as in the Meadowlands (East Rutherford, NJ) during the 1986 Power Windows tour.

The album's title comes from a lyric in the band's song "Prime Mover": "alternating currents force a show of hands." Oddly, "Prime Mover" does not actually appear on the record, though several other songs from the studio album it was on, 1987's "Hold Your Fire", do appear.
