Originally released as a 7", 12" and as a cut-to-shape picture disc.

When the single was released, american radio stations started giving airplay to the Jethro Tull cover on the B-Side, instead of the title song. As a result, Capitol records (EMI America) suggested that the song was added to the "Piece of Mind" album as a bonus track, but the band and their management refused.

The single was re-released on August 15th, 2005 across three formats including
an Enhanced CD, a strictly limited 7 Inch Blue Vinyl with free poster, and a 12 Inch Picture Disc to promote the "Death on the Road" live album.

Enhanced CD track-list:
1. The Trooper (live Dortmund 2003) - 4:13
2. The Trooper (original studio version) - 4:12
3. Prowler (live Reykjavik 2005) - 4:24

7" Inch single track-list:
A: The Trooper (live in Dortmund 2003)
B: Another Life (live in Reykjavik 2005)

12" Inch Picture Disc track-list:
A: The Trooper (live Dortmund 2003)
A: The Trooper (original studio version)
B: Murders In The Rue Morgue (live in Reykjavik 2005)

A special. limited download-only version was released following the Reykjavik gig in 2005, with live photos from the show and a 10 minute trailer of the DVD "Death on the Road". This featured a live version of The Trooper from that gig.
