Dream Theater were coerced by the record label to streamline their songwriting and work with outside writers on this album, with a view to getting more mass appeal. This is quite evident on "You Not Me", the original version of which (released as "You or Me" on the "Hollow Years" single) differs significantly from the final version which was included on the album, and was co-written and co-produced with Desmond Child.

A video was made for "Hollow Years".

The japanese edition has two bonus tracks:
12) Take Away My Pain (demo)
13) Speak To Me (demo)
On the 1st pressing of the japanese edition, the two bonus tracks are featured on a separate 3-inch bonus disc.
