"Hysteria" is Def Leppard's best seller, and also one of the best-selling Hard Rock albums ever, having sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and spawning five hit singles.

The production of "Hysteria" was a troubled affair. The band initially wanted Robert "Mutt" Lange to produce it, as he had done with their previous album, "Pyromania". When he declined, citing exhaustion, they hired Jim Steinman. A version of "Hysteria" was partly recorded with Steinman at the helm, but remains unreleased to this day, as the band members do not think favourably of it. This early recording session, however, still had to be paid for, and so the band billed themselves "The Bankrupt Brothers" in the finished album sleeve, as by the time the album was released they owed Steinman a lot of money. Even after Robert "Mutt" Lange had finally signed on as producer, they hadn't actually recorded much when drummer Rick Allen crashed his car on New Year's Eve 1984, and lost his arm. The band waited for him to recover, and learn to play a specially-designed, midi-enhanced drum kit, to resume the recording. As soon as he was playing comfortably and satisfactorily, they went back to the studio, and then Robert "Mutt" Lange had a car accident himself, which delayed the production some more.

When the album was eventually released, Def Leppard toured the world for two solid years on the back of it, and filmed the "In the Round in Your Face" live video. For part of that tour, they had Queensr├┐che as the opening band, themselves touring their "Operation: Mindcrime" album.

The reversed speech at the start of "Rocket" is actually a line from "Gods of War": "We're fightin' for the gods of war".

Music videos were made for the songs Women, Animal, Rocket, Hysteria, Love Bites and Pour Some Sugar on Me.
