Tracks 11 and 12 are taken from the 1991 'Blind Guardian IV' demo.

The band consider this not a concept album, but an "album with a concept". The idea is that the time-travelling bards come together in the forest and share their stories, i.e. the songs. The cover reflects this. The idea of the bards came from a video game Olbrich and Siepen played at the time, "The Bard's Tale".

"The Bard's Song - In the Forest" and "Theatre of Pain" were considered as singles, but the record label did not believe they had potential.

The album went to number 1 in the Japanese charts.
