"By the Gates of Moria" is partly based on the fourth movement of the "New World Symphony" composed by Antonín Dvorák in 1893.

The original vinyl version includes a photo collage insert and full lyrics that were not reproduced in the first CD pressing.

Recording information:

Recorded, mixed and mastered at Karo Studio, Munster, West Germany in October/November 1987.

Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5 and 7 are re-recordings of old demos from the band's Lucifer's Heritage era:
- Track 1, 3, 5 and 7 were on the Battalions of Fear demo (1986)
- Track 4 was on the Symphonies of Doom demo (1985). The song was called "Halloween" back then.
