The song was written by guitarist Jerry Cantrell for his father, who served in the Vietnam War. His nickname was "Rooster."

The Rooster video was partially recorded on (then) Jerry's great uncle's property, now the site of the family ranch, in Atoka, Oklahoma.

Title track "Rooster" was used to soundtrack to 2009 film "Terminator Salvation".
